DR. A. GOLDSTEIN.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR RECEPTION A meeting of members of the Jewish community was held on Monday evening, the object being the finalising of arrangements for the visit to Christchurch of Dr. Alexander Goldstein, LL.D. The president of the congregation, Mr P. Selig, presiding over a large attendance, explained the objects of the mission of Dr. Goldstein, who comes accredited by Lord Balfour. He dwelt on the extent of the colonising work carried out in Palestine by the Zionist Association, of which Dr. Goldstein was an eminent envoy. He pointed out that in the various Australian centres he had visited Dr. Goldstein had received civic receptions and been acclaimed by all classes. His first visit to New Zealand had commenced in Auckland, where a most enthusiastic reception had been tendered him in the Town Hall, and he had addressed various audiences of Jews and members of other denominations. The chairman read leading articles from the local papers dealing with Palestine and Dr. Goldstein's Mission, which had been a great success in Auckland, no less than £2700 being subscribed on the first appeal. He pointed out that after his meetings in Wellington, the missioner would leave for Dunedin, and he would arrive from there on the evening of Tuesday, August 2nd, leaving again for the north on the evening of Thursday, August 4th. Dr. Goldstein would therefore only be able to spend two days in Christchurch.

After discussion, a special committee, consisting of Messrs 8. Jacobs, Falck, J. H. Ballin, L. Goldsmith, and M. Hollander, was appointed to act with the Board of Management, to make arrangements for the visit of *Dr. Goldstein.
