CHARITABLE AID.

INCREASE IN WELLINGTON FIGURES. (press association telegkak.) WELLINGTON, April 29. Charitable aid figures show a heavy increase, last month being well above the two previous yeai-3 both in the number of cases .and the amount spent, in relief having more than doubled. All the homes are practically full of sickness, and unemployment can account for more than two-thirds of the cases. Special mention was made at the Board meeting of a widow with three children who was attracted to New Zealand in the hope of bettering herself, but failed, and wanted assistance to return to England. Mr Chapman (Labour) spoke of misrepresentation, some of which could be traced to shipping companies and the Government. It was pointed out that the woman had paid her own passage and the Government could not bo blamed. . . The question of giving the applicant assistance is to be considered.
