NEW PLAY AT THEATBE ROYAI* Friday evening will witness the final performance in Christehurch. of "The Best People," end. Saturday nfght the t»lente<j organisation who have been delighting Christchurch audiences will make their first appearance in "Meet the Wife." The author of this new piece, Mr Starling, has drawn with a sxire hand the character of Mrs Lennox, who aspires to be a social leader. Lennox is her second husband, as her first, Bellamy, vanished In the S«n Francisco earthquake. When the ourtain rises she. ia esoitedly preparing the home for the reception of a celebrity, Philljp Lord, a novelist, and, incidentally, arranging the engagement of her daughter, Doris Bellamy, to the empty-headed Victor Staunton, without any pretence at consulting Doris in the matter. When Lord arrives he turns out to be her first husband, at the sight of whom she promptly faints. The meeting of the two husbands (before Lennox is aware of Lord's Identity), and tho confidential talk between the two, when Lenno? hints at his domestic worries, and Lord suggests that he should settle the trouble once and for all by clearing out, ig very humorous. Tho east is again fortunate in the possession of the two participants in this scene, John Rowe as Phillip Lord, and William Macauley as -Lcn. nos. Thjg i 9 „ clever comedy, and the cleverest acting is achieved by Mr* Lord '? it. conv «»'« st »on with her solicitors over the phone, when ahe re-diseovered her first husband. Miss Helen Audiffred plays the part of the daughter. Miss Bellamy; Richard inters-as her lover Gregory Brown; and Robert Adams, »s Victor Staunton. The plans are now open at The Bristol.
