CHICAGO APPEALS FOR TROOPS. (BY cable—press association— copyright.) .'AUSTRALIAN AND tf.Z CABLV ASSOCIATION.^ NEW YORK, April E. A Chicago message states that, following the attendance of the primary contest by violence, this city, after the most bitterly contested municipal campaign in its history, has appealed to Governor Small, of Illinois, to be prepared to call the troops out on Tuesday, when the mayoralty election is held. Interest centres around the contest between William Thompson, Republican, and William Dever, Democrat, and the present mayoralty incumbent. Charges that 10,000 negroes will be used to foment race riots during the olections have caused officials to take extraordinary precautions. . One hundred and five police rifle squads in automobiles will tour the streets, while other police cars carrying thirty-five machine-guns will protect the polling places.
