PICNIC TRAINS.

A RECORD YEAR. Figures which render it possible to make comparisons over a period of four years in the matter of railway excursion traffic were supplied yesterday by the Department. These show that in the year 192G-27 easily the greatest number of people availed themselves of the Department's facilities for cheap picnics by rail. The following figures give the number of excursionists between April Ist and the following March sth in each period:— 1923-24 56.735 1924-25 ... ... 28,642 1925-26 4*5,723 1926-27 ... ... 62,901 In the four weeks ended March sth, 1927, 25.779 were carried by picnic trftins, as compared with 23,060 in the same period of 1926, and. 25,678 in •1924. No excursion trains were run in the 1925 period owing to the epidemic of infantile paralysis.
