WAIMATE.

BAND CONCERT

On Sunday afternoon th? Wnimatc Silver Band gave a concert at Kelcy s hush. There was a large attendance of the public. The day was beautifully fine, and the general public found plenty of shade in the bush, while listening to the programme. The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) was present, and the members of the band were the guests of the Mayoress at afternoon tea. Harvesting. Waimatc's main street did not present the ÜBunl busy appearance on Saturday last, the reason for this being that after the break made by the ram on Friday in harvesting operations, farmers, anxious to get their crops harvested, took advantage of the return to fine weather to proceed with the work, and so decided not to come to town. Sheep Sale. At the sale of lambs from Centrcwood estate, there was a large attendance of farmers and fat stock buyers, and spirited bidding was experienced, those farmers present apparently appreciating the chance of securing the lambs direct. The lambs offered were in excellent condition, and well drafted, and wero put up in lots to suit purchasers. A lino of 500 fats brought 2Gs 7d, and 600 second quality store lambs realised 225, whilo other sales were fat lambs at 245, cwo lambs at 265, and a few cull lambs at 14s 9d. Friendly Societies' Easter Sports. At the last meeting of the Council of the United Friendly Societies, Mr J. V. Binch presided. There were also present: Messrs H. Harrison, P. Boyd, S. Jones, G. Bird, G. Campbell, Duncan, A. Ottley, P. Hynes, R. Eddie, M. Leonard, R. A. Claridgc, and Woods. Tho Borough Council wrote asking .payment of tho £75 due by tho Societies on the new building in Victoria Park. The sum was passed for payment. * The programme drafted by-the subcommittee for the Easter sports was adopted. The sports officials were appointed as follows, subject to their consent: Handicappers: Cycling and running, Mr G. V. Tozer (Timnru); field events, Messrs J. Reid and C. P. Fleming; amateur running, Mr E. D. Mcßae (Timaru); youths' running, Mr J. O'Brien; oldtimers' race, Mr F. Sauer. Judges: Pipe music, Mr D. D. McDonald (Timaru); Irish dancing, Messrs J. O'Hara and J. Brohnn; starter, Mr F. Kcnnard; sports superintendent, Mr L. C. McLauchlan. The secretary was instructed to write to the Silver Band asking them if they would accept engagement for. the sports meeting. Motor CollisionSevere injuries to the head wero sustained by Frederick McKinlay, aged 17, of Waimate, as a result of a collision between a motor-car and cyclo ho was riding. Another lad, who was riding on the back of tho motorcycle, was, thrown clear, receiving only a aovoro shaking and a few bruises. Nobody in tho car was hurt. The injured lad was removed to. the hospital in a partially unconscious condition. ST. ANDREWS. Binders were busy in the district on Sunday, farmers taking advantage of every hour's cutting to reap all crops, especially those wheat crops such as Velvet and College Hunters, which shake very freely when ripe. The only wheat crops which seemed to have escaped take-all are College Hunters. So far no crops of this kind have been reported to be affected;

GERALDINE.

The first round of the South Canterbury senior competition was concluded on Saturday, when Singari, the present holders of the Bristol Cup, defeated the local side by eight wickets. At present Geraldine stands second with seven points. The scores were:Geraldine, first innings 83 (Hayes 20, Houlihan 13, Grieve 11, Stoncwigg 10); second irihings 135 (Muff 37, Itngg 26, Stonewigg 23. Grieve 16). Bowling for Zingari, Smith took seven for dU in the first innings. In the second innings Herdman took seven for 40. Zingari in the first innings made 210. (Herdman 68, Menzies 45, Earl 23), and in the second innings 15 for one wicket. Bowling for Geraldine, Shnrpo took two for 16, Grievo three for 24, and Houlihan three for 54. . On Sunday the Timaru Municipal Band, under Conductor Osborne, journeyed to Geraldine. where thev gave two concerts; in the Domain in the afternoon, and at the Town Hall in the evening. Both concerts were well attended bv the public, with the result that the hinds of the local band will be considerably augmented. The Geraldine Band have been invited to give two concerts on Caroline Bay at a future date. , The weather during last week-end wns extremely oppressive, a record temperature for this summer being registered on Sunday. As a result there was a general exodus to the country resorts, Te Moana and Peel Forest being most popular.
