SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

Mrs Frank Raymond (Beverley road) returned yesterday morning from .1 holiday at her river camp. Mrs I. X. Brodrick (Christehurch) is the guest of Mrs C. K. Thomas (lc Cren's terrace). Dr. and Mrs Johnston, who were with Mrs Walter Steward (Sealing street), have returned to Nelson. Mr and Mrs Edgar-Jones and Miss Joyce Edgar-Jones have returned from Tekapo. Mr 11. B. S. Johnstone and family have gone to Mount Cook for a short holiday. Mr "and Mrs Ki.lout (Ciirisiehurch), who have been at the Balmoral Hotel, will return to their home to-morrow. Technical College. Mr G. J. Senley (chairman) presided over the first meeting of the Board of Managers of the Timaru Technical Collego to be held here this year. There were also present: Messrs W. I. 'fait, A. Stead, K. W. Jones, A. Washer, G. Harris, and J. Gliddon. A letter was read from the Minister for Education agreeing to be present in March in order to officially open the new engineering workshops. The Board agreed that the Hon. Mr Rollcston and his Worship the Mayor and Mayoress be asked to be present. The treasurer's statement, showing a balance of £6l 17s 2d, was received and adopted. Tho Board adjourned to view the new building, and members expressed tho opinion that it was a credit to the builder in every respect. The Director reported that tho day school reopened on February Bth with nn enrolment of 110 pupils, being about the same as last year. The number was made of 40 boys and 70 girls. The new enrolments totalled 68, of these 26 being boys and 41 girls. Thero had been a decrease of country pupils, and a large increaso in town pupils. The new engineering workshop and drawing office had been finished by tho contractor, Mr W. Petrie, and was a very substantial and satisfactory job. Tho pupils, under the direction of Mr Figgins, were fitting up tho shop with shafting and erecting the machines in position, this being a splendid opportunity for practical training. The drawing office had been fully equipped with the latest design in desks, rise and fall blackboards, etc., and would meet all needs in this direction tor many years to come. The wool room had been completed, and fully fitted up, and the plumbing shop was also ready for occupation, so that all tho activities of tho institution would now be carried on in the school premises. The Minister for Education had consented to visit Timaru in March in order to open the new buildings. The report was adopted. Outbreak of Fire. The Timaru Firo Brigade was called out shortly after six o'clock last evening to an outbreak of fire in the, roof of a dwelling in King street. The blaze was extinguished before any serious damage resulted.

TJEMUKA. J MOTOR COLLISION. On Saturday afternoon a motor-car, driven by Mrs S. Johnson, of Temuka, travelling north along King street, was turning into High street when it ran into a car driven by Mr Parker Bracefield, which was travelling south. Both the back tyres of the car belonging to Mr Bracefield were torn about, and tho front of the other car was slightly damaged, but no one was injured. Cricket , , Temuka had an easy win over Pareora on Saturday at the Oral, gaining a lead of 77 runs on the first innings. The weather conditions were- perfect, and Tomuka, thanks to the batting of Coventry, who notched. 61, compiled 125. Salmon reached 17 before being run out, and Chapman 12. Sinclair, 6 for 41, and Hendry, 2 for 16, were the most successful bowlers. Pareora replied with 68 (Mcßeth 15). Divan secured three wickets for 15, Williams five for 30, and Edwards one for six. A Working Bee. The committee of the Milfcrd Lagoon Association is fortunate in having a willing band of workers, who are assisting materially towards the protective works at the lagoon. During the weekend a working bee of about a dozen men did the timbering of a portion of the embankment. Mrs Hammond provided refreshments. Horse Drops Dead. On Saturday afternoon an aged horse belonging to Mr S. Goodson. of Clandeboye, was being driven along Denmark street, when it aropped dead near the corner of Wilkin Btreet. Later it was removed by the owner with a motor-lorry.
