FINED AND DISQUALIFIED FOR TWO YEARS. i [THB PBSBS BpaeUl Service.] DI'NEDIN, February U. The adjourned proceedings agaiiwt Walter Philip Hailes, described by the Magistrate (Mr H.'W. Bundle, S.M.J us a callous motorist who was a constant menace to tho public, were concluded this morning. The cases had been adjourned to allow tho police to go into the question of proceedings against Hailcs with an indictable cufircc. Chief-Detective- Cameron said that the police had no. intention of proceed'ing against the man on indictment. Going into tho man's record os a driver, the Chief-Detective said, "At Oamaru, ori December Bth last, Hailes was fined £1 for reckless driving. He was previously involved in two accidents in the Balclutha. district. Once he ran into a flock of sheep and there was some litigation as a result. Also. in turning a corner with his car, he went over a bank and wrecked the machine." - Tho Magistrate, in cancelling accused's license, said: "I must take into consideration the reputation the motorist bears. He,is a menace to the public, and certainly the public must je protected from a man who, after nn accident, proceeds on his way without stopping to render aid, and without notifying anyone of the accident. On the charge of dangerous driving he will be fined 410 with Court costs £1 Bs, and witnesses' expenses, £6. while he will 1)0 prohibited from driving for two years. For failing to stop after, the accident he will he fined £lO. with Court costs," and for failing to report the accident he will be convicted only.-'
