The North Island apprentice, A. H. Driscoll, had been engaged to ride F. T>. Jones' team at Dunedin, but, owing to the month's disqualification imposed on him at the Egmonfc Meeting on Thursday, another rider will havo to be sought. In all probability, A. Brown, the apprentice attached to G. J. Pine's stable, will have the mount on Battlement in the Dunedin Cup. The following riding engagements have been mado by Riccarton horsemen for the Dunedin Meeting next week:J. Beale: Gold Mint, Coch-y-bondhu, Chickwheat, Don Jose, Rapier; C. E. Eastwood: Pink Terrace, Countersign; C. Emerson: Jericho, Glentruin, Set Sail, Master Clarence; F. E. Jones: Centrepiece, Serotina, Broadmoor, Thorncfale.

Margaret Birney struck herself whilst galloping with Battlement on Tuesday morning, and has since been eased in her work. Her trip to Dunedin has in consequence- been cancelled. Sir Gcorgo Clifford's two-year-old filly. Sudden Storm, has not pleased her trainers since the Wellington Meeting, and on Thursday was decisively beaten by Broadmoor in a gallop over six furlongs. In consequence she will not be taken to Dunedin, and the stable will be represented by Broadmoor in the Champagne Stakes. Assurance has suffered slightly from muscle soreness during the past week, and he is an unlikely visitor to the Dunedin Meeting. R. Emerson will, however, make th« trip with Master Clarence, owned by Mr A. Louisson. He. is an upstanding three-year-old gelding by CUrenceust from Red Queen Jdant of Gay Queen), and hat only faced the starter on two occasions, in each case giving the impression that he would develop into a useful galloper. 6. 3. Pine'a team for the Dunedin Meeting will comprise Crossbow, Don Jose, and Silver Coot. The first-named fot on the winning list at Timaru in lecember last and ran creditably at frtntham last month. He figures in tho Berwick Handicap on the first day at Wingatui. while Don Jose and Silver Coot will represent Mr G. Gerard in the Champagne Stake*.

Th* light-weight horseman, It. H. Sums, who has been domiciled in the tago district for the past six months, has again settled in Rfcearton. Jarretiere has made marked improvement since entering H. Ellis' stable at Riecarton, and will be given a race at the C.J.C. Midsummer Meeting.

Thd Riccarton atables will ba strougly repreMrited in the hurdle 6v«nt» at Dunklin by Radi&c, Sayonara, and En Route, land they should take & prominent part in the decision of the events. The owner-trainer, J. H. Prosser, will have the five-year-old mare, Flaming Ray (Clarencettx—Formnal) racing in his interest! at Dunedin, and she will b# a starter in the President's Handicap, over a mile and a quarter, on the opening day. Flaming Ray, who was ored oy her owner, waa not raced till ue was a three-vear-old, when she was started on twelve occasions for one win (Trial Plate, Waikouaiti) and a second. Last season she contested five races without occupying a place. In the present season she has been produced on si* occasions, winning the Abaura Welter Handicap, «ewn furlongs, and running second m the President's Handicap, one mile, at the Greymouth Midsummer Meeting. What is believed to be ft record insurance has been effected by Mr Jorge Mitre, proprietor of the Argentine newspaper, "La Nacion," and grandson of the famous General Bartolemeo Mitre, who haft insured his colt Macon in London for £30,000. This horse won all the classic events of this and last season at Buenos Aires, and has not yet been beaten. He has also beaten all records for prize-winning. Macon is the son of Sandal out of Bourgogne, and is eloiely related to the celebrated St. Simon. TUtf committee Of the Manawata Racing Cltib has decided to hold an Autumn Meeting in ApriJ, states a message from Palmerston North. By special train to-day orer sixty horses will be conveyed to Cheviot to assist at the club's first totalisntor Meeting. CHEVIOT T.C. ANNUAL. i TROTTERS IN U.S.A.

HIGH PRICES AND LOW. The annua! "ies of trotting stuck in America are locked upon by tho trotting community much as our galloping men look upon tho annual yearling sale*. Tho biggest event of th« sort mi America is called tho "Old Glory Sale " which was held in December last in New York. A total of £53,91-3 was received for 307 head, an average of £173 13s Id. Highly bred, well performed ones that stood out brought prices beyond the hope of Australian buvers, but the general run o! young stock went at very low figures. Adam, a two-vear-old colt who last season made a' record of 2.7, bv Arion Guy <I.S9J\ topped the market at £34OU, the runner-up being Guy MoKinncy, thrc-vear-old (-.l}', "«" brought £2400. Guy McKinncy « a > the winner ol the rich Hambletonian Stake and other Futurities, and in view of the possibilities of such a colt iti America, both as a racehorse and nt the stud, it seems a small price as compared to the £ISOO said to have been paid for Concliff a few weeks ago. Among the lot wore a few by Peter Chenault, the American sire now doing stud dutv in New Zealand at a fee of 30 guineas. Maggie Chenault, a four-year-old mare by Peter Chenault from Maggie Winder,"pacer, 2.6J, by Oratoria, was sold for £3J. Maggie has a two-year-old record of '2.234, which she has never improved on. Peter A hern, a two-vear-old geldinc by Peter Chenault from Nancy Woods, by The Northern Man, sold for £s'?. Ethol Chenault, a yearling filly from Ethel AVorthy, by Axworthy, brought £4O. Sonata., a three-year-old colt by Etawah from Sonoma Girl (2.4J), brought £BO. Sonata is a half-brother to Sonoma Harvester, by The Harvester, now doing stud duty in New Zealand. As regards the Guy Axworthy-Peter the Great Cress, which our breeders are going dilly over, outside the crackajacks a Riverina station could bei stocked with youngsters carrying it, at anvthina between £SO and £IOO a nob, ana when they get over the colt stage without showing anything extra, they are almost given away. However, youngsters with illustrious relatives bring prices that Australians would not care to pay, as shown by the following few instance?. Three yearlings by Guy Axworthy. £9OO. £IBOO. £IO4O. Two yearlings by Belwin, £I6OO. £IOOO. Yearlings by San Francisco, £I3OO.
