Great interest wa3 taken locally in the cricket, match which commenced yesterday ailcrnoon at Tirnaru Park, between representatives of Canterbury and South Canterbury. Though the day was not a holiday thero was nevertheless a good public attendance, much of the interest being due to the close proximity of the Knglish tour and the fuct that an idea would bo gained of the visitors' strength for their southern match. The teams were as followH: Canterbury: Pnge (captain), 15o«n, Hamilton, Mcrritt, C. Oliver, Cunningham, Kvans, Nixon, Crawford, and Talbot (one man missing.) South Canterbury: J. Kano (captain), M. Anglaml, C. Harding, D. Mcßetli, G. Davies, C. Thomson, L). Menzics, A. flerdman, W. Ditchfield, L. Grieve, and S. Muff. At the conclusion of the first day'a play the scores stood as follows:—Canterbury, first innings 148; South Canterbury, first innings 100. Canterbury in tlw second innings had lost two wickets for 13 runs, when stumps ware drawn. For Canterbury Pago made GO runs, Crawford 23, and Oliver 10, while for South Canterbury the best scorers wero Davies who made 25, and Kane with 19. Bowling for South Canterbury, Mcßeth look seven wickets for 53 runs, and for Canterbury, Cunningham took seven fdr 31. The game will be concluded to-day. "PRESS" 3IATCH.
