PERSONAL. Mis 3 May Fitzgerald left during the week to join the nursing staff of the Oamaru Hospital. Visitors to the Crown Hotel this week include Mr and Mrs Buddie (Christchurch), Mr Scott (Timaru), Mr Templin, Mr and Mrs Smith (Christchurch), Mr Gillen (Dunedin), Mr Lucas (Dunedin), Mr Robinson (Christchurch), Mr Kellett (Dunedin), Messrs Elphick, Partridge, Newell, and Mackay, Miss Chemsson, Mr Simpson (Christchurch), and Mr Cooper. Mr J. Redpath, of Christchurch, is visiting Temuka. Mr and Mrs North, Mr and Mrs Stevenson, and Mr and Mrs Forsythe, all of Otago, who have been touring the West Coast, are camping at Manse bridge, Temuka. Temuka Plunket Society. A meeting of the committee was held in tho Rest Room on Tuesday last, there being present: Mesdames Arniitage (in the chair), Twentymau, Gapper, Oliver, Haucox, D. Paterson, Thomson, Gunnion, G. W. Cartwright, Wightman, Hayhurst, and Sheen. Before beginning the business of the meeting the president spoke of the great loss to the Society caused by the death of Lady King. A resolution was passed expressing sympathy with Sir Truby and Miss King and the deep appreciation of the wonderful work Lady King had done for the mothers and children of New Zealand. It was reported that tho new Plunket Room was ready for occupation, and details in connexion with the furnishing and arrangements .were discussed. The Nurse's report for December showed 32 new cases for the month with 80 visits to tho office and 508 visits paid to homes. The car had travelled 1112 miles. A . letter was received from Nurse Cameron announcing her resignation. It was decided to accept this with regret, and to place on record tho Society's high appreciation of her devoted service during the past twelve years, and to wish her all happiness in her new life. Nurse Cameron wished to be relieved as from March Ist, and it was decided to invite her to meet the committee and mothers at tea on March loth. The matter of a present if desired by the mothers of the district, is to be left to them to organise independently from the committee. It was decided that in future meetings would be held in the new rooms on the first Monday in each month. Two Motors Burned. At 9.30 o'clock on Thursday night an iron and timber building belonging to Mr W. McCallum, main South road, Temuka, was discovered to be on fire, the outbreak being first noticed by passing motorsts, who notified the owner living in a house alongside. The building comprises a garage, a feed-house, and two loose-boxes, and together with a motor-car and motor delivery van was completely destroyed. The flames had a good hold and all attempts to subdue the fire were futile. Fortunately there was no wind, as otherwise the dwelling and a crop of ripe oats alongside may have caught. The origin of the fire is unknown, though it is surmised that it originated in the ear which had just been returned to the garage, after a run. Both motors were insured, the van for £IOO, and the car for £230. The building was covered for £SO, but.the owner is faced with a substantial los 3 on the contents of the building. Bowling. The following games have been arranged for to-day in connexion with the Temuka club competitions:— Brown Cup: G. Levens, Jamieson, McInnes, Ferguson (s) v. Thomson, Cooper, Pierce, Fraser (s); Brown, Stephens, Abbott, Carpenter (s) v. Wilson, 8., Harvey, Hope, Edwards (s). B grade singles: Brown v. Jamieson; B. Levens v. Taylor; Pierce v. Wilson. GERALDINE. On Thursday afternoon the members of the local Masonic Lodge, with their ■ families, held their annual picnic near the river on the Winchester road, and spent a very pleasant time. Races and sports were provided for the children. Tlu bicycle road race arranged by Mr H. Thompson took place on Thursday evening, when fourteen youths competed, and there were many onlookers, especially at the winning tape. The distance covered was eighteen miles. Mr Lorimer acted as starter, and the judges were Messrs P. Hendry, R. Wood, J. Stevenson, and A. Burmister. The winners were: T. Connolly (lmin) 1, R. Towuley (3min) 2, L. Bell (lmin) 3, J. McMillan (2min) 4._ T. Leighton fastest time. Time. 51min 0 2-ssec. At a meeting of .the Geraldine District High School Committee, it was agreed to hold the annual school picnic on February 10th, at Caroline Bay. Members agreed to canvass for subscriptions to defray expenses' and make the necessary arrangements. The Horticultural Society Committee met, when it was reported that there were 472 entries at the late show, the receipts amounting to about £SO, and the prize-money to £3B. Hearty thanks were accorded the judges and all whd helped. ' A proposal to hold an artumn show of fruit, flowers, and vegetables was discussed, but was eventually held over for a future meeting. Members of the Geraldine Bowling Club motored to Fairlie on Thursday and engaged in a six-rink game, defeating Fairlie by 157 to 91. The keen green just suited the visitors, who were entertained most hospitably, and had a very pleasant time. Harvesting will be general next week if the present favourable weather continues. 'Many of the crops in the district are looking exceedingly well. ST. ANDREWS. Perfect harvest weather is being experienced, and oat and grass crops are being reaped daily. The fine weather has brougi-t llic wheat on apace, and fanners are busy overhauling their binders in preparation for its cutting. Sonic wheat on the Bluecliffs road is almost ready for the binder. Owing to their failing to have a fireproof operating bo::, several picture companies have boon refused permission to screen in the Public Hall. It is the- intention of the Hall Committee to erect a lire-proof box of their own, so in the future tho residents should j be better catered for in the way of I moving-pictures.
