;[ NOTES ON THE RACING. (SrtCiat. TO TDB PRKB3.) ''■' DUNEDIN, January 27. , The Summer Meeting of the Forbury Park Trotting' Club opened to-day, in excellent weather. There was a very largo 1 attendance, including visitors from Canterbury, North Otago, Olago, and Southland, 1 while local rations were present in strong ' fotce. In the majority of the races the " fields were large, and a capital day's racing - was witnessed. The winners were hard to 1 select. Only . one favourito won, liiacar, p while ■ several oi tha other winners paid useful dividends. Loganwcod. who is oce of ' the moat consistent of Logan Pointer's pro- ' geny in commission, won the Dunedin Cup " from Parkwood and Sea. Pearl, and Slue 1 Thoruo defeated a papular fancy in Lo Todd - in tha Otago Cup Handicap. The track was not at its best, with tho result that the times registered were much slower than t might have been oxpected, under tho favours' able, weathex conditions. s Tha day'a racing opened with, the Vansj hall Handicap, and the eleventh-hour withl drawal of Sobranto and Major Dorao loft aovonteen starters. It was a fairly even » betting rr.ee. . The coupled horses, Ben I -Logan and Swiftest, Were, favourites, and Nelson McKinney, Alpha- Y/ilkes, Great Elect, and Bonvrcod were backed in that f orcjer. The race waa lull of intsreßt. and - with & round to go Jade, Great Elect, I Alpha Wilkes, Bonette, Hawkesbury's Pride, . and Bonwcod all had a fighting chance. 3 oado was the. first to'retire beaten, mobile going down the back straight Bonwood and , Alpha "Wilkes appeared to be doing thoir 1 best. Two furlonga from home Hawkes- > bury'a Pride joined Great Elect and Bonl ette, and, assisted by a good passage on - the rails, went on to -win with something : in band from Bon Logan, who finished fast, and defeated deal Elect for second money, followed by Bonette, Alpha Wilkes, and ' Bon'wood. The winner, Hawkesbnry'e Pride, * ia a five-year-old mam by EI Carbine (imp.) > from Gardenia (imp.). She has been heavily t supported mora than once, but has failed. ;' On thia oceaaioii ebe bad the services of J. , McLehnan, and mncli of her success waa due to his superior horsemanship. 'Beal Ladr'setUecl down an* trotted a solid raw into atco'nd place. From

344 yds Engagement trotted a fine r»ce, but was" not equal to winning. Avalanche was prominent for three-parts of the journey, and then faded into fourth place. He should benefit by the race, and do better on Saturday. The principal race on the card, the Dunedin Cup Handicap, of 750 sovs and a silver cup valued 25 sovs, for horses that can do 4.32 or better, attracted a field of twelve horses, Nelson Derby, who has gone amiss, and Bessie Logan being scratched. It was a good betting race, with Golden Devon favourite, and Sea Pearl, Jack Potts, Parkwood, and Logan Chief backed in that order. With the exception of Downcast and Jack Potts, who broke at the start, the rest of the field moved away in line, and after Parkwood, Golden Devon, Sea Pearl, Ouimet, and Jack Potts, had flattered their supporters, Loganwood put in his claim in the home straight, and defeated Parkwood by a narrow margin, and returned his supporters a useful double-figure dividend. Loganwood raced well at Canterbury Park, and in view of this fact paid a surprisingly good dividend. Parkwood . was always, well placed, but did not stay out the journey as welt as the winner. Sea Pearl paced a sound race, and finished third, with Jack Potts fourth. The last-named showed as much speed as anvthing else in the race, and only for the ground he lost at the start, necessitating his going round the field, he would certainly have finished closer up than fourth. Trenand. Ouimet, and Golden Devon were prominent for n mile and three-quarters, while such chances as Black Admiral and Logan Chief possessed were lost through bt. Maura mixing her gait in the back straight and interfering with both horses. One of the largest fields seen at Forbury Park, thirty-two horses, contested the Southland Handicap, in which Logan Park, an n»cd gelding by Logan Pointer from Miss Burlington, locally owned and trained, was seen in a favourable light. .He was never far awav from the leaders, lour furlongs from homo he assumed the lead, and scored an easy win from Conara and Kinney Dillon, who were fortunate in getting a good passage. Outsido tho placed horses Jolly «06° r ' Golden Dawn, and Bricklayer made tho best showing, and finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively. Kosethorne. who was favourite, led for ten furlongs, and then compounded, and, together with the rest ot the field, finished some distance behind the placed horses. The race was run in fast time, as the placed horses, Logan Park", Conara, and Kinney Dillon, improved upon their handicaps 5 2-ssec, 4sec, and 3sec respectively. ... ~ «, „ C„T, There was no scratching in tho Otago oup, and . the South Canterbury-trained Blue Thorpe effected a surprise by winning from fourteen others. Tho son of Lord Althorpc and Peggy V. handled himself much better in harness than hitherto, and it was one of his best efforts to date. Le Todd made a bold showing. Going down the back the last timo he gave out a strong challenge, and two furlongs from homo was in front but he hit himself.. and . did not .finish as strongly as tho winner, Blue Thorpe. Charles Dixie trotted his usual consistent race and easilv beat all but Blue Thorpe and Le Todd. Proud Ata, Merry Bingen, and Bony Spec mado the best showing ot the others. Ingle Bingen and Peter HcKimiey both made mistakes, while the three back-markers—Master Audo, Escapade,- and Money Spider—were set a task to which they wore not equal. Another large field of twenty-one horses contested the King George handicap, and after. a fine race Honour Bright and Jolly Chimes passed the winning post locked together, the judge's verdict being a doad'heat. At the far turn both horses drew clear from the rest of the field, and under pressure had •he finish to. themselves After a lot of extra ground Desborough finished third, followed by Some Wilkes, Logan Holme, and Avenger. Trimmer, Bold Bill, and Golden Bubbles were *"«•"«"'&' three-parts of the journey. The favourite, Terence Dillon, went a sound race but from 72yds, with a large field in front of him, was not equal to the task. Nantwich, who is partial to "hn't com e , led from start to finish in the l?lj• ng Ha (U cap, and- scored a comfortable win fiom Bingen Lad, who gave out a strong challenge more than .once, but was always held safe by the winner. Bessie Logan quickly worked herself into ft good position, and looked like extending the winner, but owing.to an interrupted passago was beaten into third PlaeT The effort of the favourite, Parkwood was disappointing. A furlong from homo be was running second, but broke, and finally finished unplaced. Tommy Direct broke up at the start, while the rest of the .field were beaten for speed, and will require to improve to have n winning chance on baturday.
