BUS SERVICES.

EXTENSIONS WANTED.

REQUESTS TO BOARD. Several requests for the extension of bus services came before tho Tramway Board yesterday. The Works and Traffic Committee reported that the Board had received a petition from residents, sent through the Papanui Burgesses' Association under Section 17 of the Motor Omnibus Act, asking for an extension of the Bryndwr bus service from the present terminus northward via Idria road, Bligh's road, Matson's road to Harewood road, thence along Harewood road to the boundary of the City of Christchurch. The committee had before it the result of a count of houses in the district to bo served, with estimates of cost of supplying the desired service, also with estimate of receipts. It was estimated that the loss,on such a service would be not less than £SOO a year. The opinion was endorsed by the private proprietor who ran a bus service into the district some time ago. The present bus service to Bryndwr was already losing nearly that amount; the Shirley bus service half the amount; while the Springfield road bus service was paying its way. The committee regretted that it could not seo its way at present to add further to the financial responsibilities of its existing tramway and bus nervices, and recommended that the proposal bo declined. The Papanui Progress League asked for an extension by another route, viz., by way of Wairarapa road, but the committee had to make the same recommendation in that case also.

Shirley. The committee recommended that the request of residents at Shirley for an extension of their bus route to Petrie street be aOceded to. The 4d fare section of the route was at present shorter than Bryndwr or Springfield road. The route at the Shirley end would be Hills road, Warden street, Petrie street, with the terminus at the corner of Petrie street ahd Shirley road, returning to town along Shirley road, thence by way of Hills road, etc.

South Brighton. The committee stated that it had considered the request of the South Brighton Progress League for the establishment of a bus service along Breezes road, thence eastwards to the proposed now bridge but could not recommend tho Board to grant the request.

Avonside. When tho Board acceded to the request of residents to re-establish the bus sorvice to Avonside which had been abandoned by a private proprietor, the committee stated it d * Cld ™ to impose a • cash fare of 4d for the through journey, although the private proprietor had previously charged 3d. The private proprietor told the Board that if he had continued the service he would have added one penny to his fares, and that has been corroborated by Mr H. J. Knight, who acted as agent for the private proprietor when the Board was required to purchase his bus. The committee 'recommended that a 12-ride concession ticket be sold for 3s 3d.

Springfield Eoad. The committee also reported that it had given consideration to the request of Springfield road residentsfor an extension of their service to Mays road, and-hoped to be able to bring a definite recommendation before the Board at its next meeting. „j rrw The report of the Works and Traffic Committee was adopted..
