TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for the Hawke'e Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting close to-day. Nominations for the principal events at the Canterbury Jockey Ciub'a Grand National Meeting close at 8 p.m. to-raorrow. Nominations for the Waimate Hunt Meeting close on June 29th. The Martian gelding, Star Ranger, who caused surprise when lie won the Avondaio Cup, £2OOO, in September lost as seventeenth selection, has rejoined J. Lowe's team at Trentham and i» working strongly. Despite an injured collarbone, Aucklander S. Henderson expects to ride over the Trentham and Iticcarton fences shortly. Doubts are expressed as to whether Kilbronsyth, winner of the last Douro Cup Handicap, will stand up to a future preparation. Sayonara was responsible for a useful exhibition over a round of the hurdles at Ricarton yesterday morning. He was associated with his stable mate, Bonomol, who, although jumping the firafc three hurdles well, struck the last obstacle heavily and dislodged Ins rider, D. Gunn. B. Shaw, who suffered a nasty fall at Riocarton on Tuesday morning, has recovered fr&m the effects and will be able to resume riding this week. "Prince Feiouz and Radiac were companions in a schooling task over i* round of the hurdles at Rjccarton yesterday. Both gave satisfactory displays.
Thp yoiing Lejghtons that were paraded at the Napier Pork Meeting last week wore a fine appearanced batch of juveniles and« their future prospects orf conformation and general outlook should be of the favourable order. One of the band is a half-brother,to Nincompoop, and is fully related to Father's Voice and High Pitch; as the baby is out of Valvate, who is a half-, dister to Father's Voice and High' Pitch by Feramorz. Comical was never dangerous in the big hurdles at Napier: on Saturday. A' rn<;e or two should work a vast.improvement in Mr H. M. Campbell's juinper. The Merry Queen gelding, when fit and well,' is one of the top-notchers in the Dominion. Mr h. - Clare, the owner of Royal Piay'em, could not be considered one of Fortune's favourites of late. The P lydamon gelding has up to date cost hire something like four figures without a return, and just when he is coming right and .wins with his head in his obest the rider loses a few-Hounds weight from the lead bag'and is disqualified. Not long ago Mr Clare lost a fine rising two-year-old half-brother bv Cynio to Royal Diadem through an accident. He was thought very highly of. and the loss was 6erious. It is a long lane that has ro turning, however, and a balf*brotber to Merry Damon by. Catmint rising two years in a grand colt who may turn out r&JJy g<wd, while for the present Royal Uiftdem looks like repaying! some of liie outlay. For the season just closing the now A\fctralian-owned Tommy Dodd was the most successful stake earner of the horses trained on the. Southland Racing -Club's tracks, "the amount won by the son of Solferino being £2537. jfat to Tommy Dodd as a stake earnej.comes Penury Rose-, with £l6sU of whidh £IO3O was eecured by his success in the Grand National Hurdles. Baldowa is a close third with £1670 to his credit, while Set Sail is not far behind with £1645. These were ' the only horses to reach four figures The annual Rugby football encounter between local ana visiting horcsmen ' ••'. was played i D Hastings during the week-end, and. that the struggle. • excited a great; deal of' interest .was, provecl by the fact'that the match was witnessed-, by a crowd of over 500 people.- As for : the' game itself, it m"ust be stated that-it; ;.ended in a dfciw, three all, and although brilliant and sparkling play of All Black, stan-' ■* ■'. d«ird r may "have been absent, there was plenty doing to keep the spectators not only interested, but in a high pitch of amusement. The game, as ttie scores indicate, was very- even. Two-gold medals were presented, one by Mr Harold. Russell, chairman of thei HawkVs Bay Jockey Club, and one by local sports. The former, for the best visiting player, was awarded to'the'weU-ktfown steeplechase # rider, W; Rennie, the local medal going to Harry "Dunn.

The winner paced a sound race. He started eleventh favourite, and paid a large dividend. Mars and Ratapa were always well Placed, but «W »«)j held safe by the winner. Uncle. Bert fin|pbed . fast In fourth place, while but for breakIne, Holly Boy would have finished closor up than fifth. Gofdep Hope was interfered with, and fell in the first six furlongs, while, owing to a bad passage, UrsWfle »w} 'Dillon Hupn were not seep to.the best advantage. Prior to the start of the race, : Holly Boy was purchased by Mr B. A. Armstrong, and in future will be trained by W. J. Tomkinson. , „ • T All started in tho Boysl Handicap. , J. Bullock's pair, Peterson and Sister Beatrice, were favourite, with Credit Slip, Nelson Ata, and Fairlight the pest-backed of the others. For a mile it Was. a goed race, but at tbisv stage, Gold Sovereign, Tero, Nelson Ata,-Sweet Henvry, JfalrJlght, and Sister Beatrice wore weir clear of the others. Ofiia Sovereign, who had begun smartly and led ovor tho first furlong; was still in charge and trotting evenly, with ,Tare and Nelson Ata his 'nearest attendants. Entering the last clrcnlt, Tere lost his position through broaWng, and Nelson Ata took second place with Bister Beatrice well clear pf the others. Gold Sovereign led into the straight, where he looked a winner, but failed to withstand a strong challenge from Nelson Ata. Both horses passed tho judge's box locked together. Sister Beatrieo was third, followed by Tere, Folrjight, and Sweet Memory. Gold Sovereign made all his own running. The. Gold Bell gelding made no mistakes, and only failed in the l»st few yafcjs- Tito honours of the raca were with Nelson Ata, who, from 66yds, trotted a fine race. The half-brother to Proud Ata was nicely bandied by R. B. Berry, who is seldom seen behind a straight-out trotter. Sister Beatrice-bad every chance, but was left without a final effort. Tere made more than one mistake, while Fairlight went • good race, but found the company too select. Becky Logan was the only scratching in the Prince of Wales Handicap, loavlng eleven starters. Cardinal Logan was a warm favouritc, and carried over 1000 tickets more than Imprint, who was neyt in demand. Talaro also received solid support. From start to finish the race was most interesting, and as the leaders turned into the straight for boms fully half-a-dozen of the competitors held a winning chance, and in a fine finish Imprint won by half a length from Cardinal Logan, who' Was a neck in front of Dillon Wilkes, and Talaro .a;head away fourth. The winner was better handled than on the first day. ! Ho lost ground at tho start, but was not ' unduly hurried, and when it came to the business end of the race be responded gamely i and easily outstayed the opposition. Cardinal Logan also suffered at the start, losing fully twonty yards, but once on the journey ho i paced a fine race. Dillon Wilkes went a ( better race than on the first day, and ? m , third -- T »e distance was too far t for Talaro, as he tired after being in a good position at the end of a wile and throequarters. Logan Lou went a good race, and finished fifth. All Bell was prom neat for twelve furlongs. Prince p ß | nter nnd Logan Chief both gave a moderate display, while Doctor Dillon. The winner, Jean Darling, is an aged mans (.y ■Wilkinson from a Grattan Abbey mars, bnis not a good stayer, but is more than usefid ovor short courses. A furlong from homo Cock Hinton looked like finishing second, but tired over the last hundred yards, and Anselm boat him by threequarters of a length. Signorclla and Mara wero prominent for a mile, but failed to stay, while after an interrupted passage, Stanmoor finished fifth. A successful day's racing concluded with tbo Au Revoir Handicap, in which lalaro was seen in a favourable light, s.ud won by a head from Becky Logan, with Be 1 Harold a similar distance away third, followed by Logan Lou, Bessie Logan, All Bell, and Peter Bingen. lhe winner, Talnro, is a five-year-old gelding by Great Audubon from Coin Ho was placed in both the big racss, and evidently found tho shorter journey more to his liking.
