CITY STREETS.
, »— — ■ REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE. Or. ' % H. Butterfield asked 'the Works Committee, at last nighfc'B meeting of the City Counoilj when it was proposed to put into repair Matlock arid Mackworth streets, Woolston. Or. B S. Andrews said nothing could be done until.the drainage contracts ,in hand were finished. The Works Committee toas iti constant commiiuaoatioli with the Drainage Board regarding the completion of the contracts, and was trying desperately to make on* arrangement through it with the contractors for the, setting aside of a portion of the contract money to be paw to the Works ( wninittee, which offered to finish'off the work of putting the streets in order again. It was prepared to do the work, and could do so more cheaply than the contractors. One of the ittewspapere, which was evidently without a Icnowledge of the position, had published unfair oriti<cism of the Works Committee, and the suggestion had been made, in the case of Easor's road, that mortey received from the contractor • had been expended elsewhere. He had, ascertained, however, that it had been expended on the road, which was in good order. That was the ojily" case in which money had been feceived from the contractor. "It is of no use pecking at the Council," concluded Or. Andrews. "It is not in possession of the money; and if it. were, rb would be throwing it away to* expend it on the Streets before the contracts aro finished.'',
