BOXING MARQUIS.

A VISITOR TO NEW J ZEALAND. I TALKS ON HIS SPORT. (SrECIAL TO THE PRESS.) WELLINGTON, June 21, Two boxers, and captains of Oxford University in different years, stepped ashore from the Tahiti to-day. They were the Marquis of Clydesdale, known the world over as the boxing Marquis, and Edward Egan, amateur heavyweight champion of the world. Mr Egan was Ehodes Scholar for Colorado, and gained his title at the Olympic Games in 1920, also winning the American championship in 1922, and the British champidnship in 1923. The Marquis of Clydesdale has twice been a semi-finalist in the British amateur middle-weight championship. Other members of the Marquis's patty are Messrs B. and T. Pirie, who are also interested in amateur boxing. To* day Lord Clydesdale gave his opinion that the manner in which all New Zealand boxing was placed under the control of. the Government was a very excellent arrangement, and one which might be imitated by other countries with profit. "It should be open to every boy to learn how to box," he said. "He should be able to do this for a small fee, and he would have theuse of a good gymnasium for training purposes. At Home, lam sorry-to say, ■the gymnasiums are not good, though the boys, who are keen, work wonders with themselves. The standard of amateur boxing in England is high, and I think that we have many promising your fighters coming on." There is a possibility of a match being arranged for Lord Clydesdale while he is in the Dominion. Hie stay here will, extend over a month. While he was in Sydney, he was asked to box with Harry Collins, welter and .middleweight champion of Australia, for charity, but as some question of his amateur status arose the match was not held. ..•.."■■'!
