MONTHLY MEETING.

It was resolved to grant permission for the erection of the memorial gates and authority to remove game in the event of the property passing out of the hands of the Board, a contribution of £5 to be made to the .committee towards the cost of a wooden gateway, this amount to be tin offset against the cost of memorial gates It was further resolved to inform the committee that it must hp responsible for the upkeep of the gales Several requirements at ths Rangiora Bchool were referred to Messrs Bignel) and Wild and the school architect for a report A report was received from the Sonioi Inspector in connexion with the piop-wal to rebuild the Russell's Flat school The Senior Inspector stated that there vas an excellent opportunity here for consolidation at Springfield, tbctre being five schools in the district, all of which are old and some of them on the list of urgent works Mr McLeod suggested that if it should be found impracticable at the present time to consolidate all the schools, the Board as a temporary measure consider the possibility of conveying the Russell's Flat children to Annat, which was only four and a half miles distant, and where there was ample room for them. The report was adopted and it was resolved that a copy of the inspector's lottei be forwarded to the committee Enquiries were to be made as to whether the oommittee was willing for th» children attending Russell's Flat school to bo conveyed to Annat, and, if so, the committee be requested to obtain an estimate of the cost of . onveyance. The Belfield school oommittee wrote teporting the total destruction of the sohool by Are at midnight on .Tune 4th. and a petition was received from the resi dents requesting the early rebuilding of 'he school Messrs Hughes and Armitage reported on an enquiry into the causes that led to the fire by which the sch<v| was destroyed The report was adopted, and it was decided to' ask "Messrs Hughes and Armitage to visit the district, to convene a meeting, and to point out the advantages of consolidation with Orari or Geraldine, If the residents were not agreeable to this, the office to be instructed to prepare a plan and estimate with' a view to obtaining n . grant for the replacement of the school The Harewood schools' application for a new room was referred to the Senior Inspector for a report. The Papanui School Committee applied fo, the dedication of a strip of 'and a quarter of a chain wide the full width, of the new school site in Winter's road for the widening of the road.- It was resolved to reply that the Board would dedicate the land if the Waimairi County Council would erert the front fence and do all necessary < hannelling. A report was presented by the Senior 11-epector in response to a letter received from th« St. Albanß School Committee, re porting overcrowded conditions, especially in the infant department The Senior In speotor Mated that the question of addi tions at St Albans school should be con sidered in connexion with the general policv of tho Board with respect to large schools, the roll number at present being 784 and thi; average attendance for March 633 The floor spa<o showed that there was 11 7 square feet per pupil in average attendance and over 10 square feet per pupil on the roll number, and this being the case the Senior Inspector did not consider this a matter of uigenoy —The report was adopted. A letter was received from the Canterbury School Committees' Association covering the following resolution passed at the annual meeting: "That the Education >?oard be asked to instruct ite architect to report on schools in Canterbury most urgently in need of heating and on the cost of heating those schools"—lt was resolved that the information be supplied ae early as possible. Finance Oommittee. In reply to a renewed application for • grant towards the funds of the Workers' Educational Association, it was- resolved to reply that the Board had no funds for this purpose. Accounts amounting to i 3705 Ge were passed for payment. Normal School Oommittee. The principal reported that Miss BlaiHo had commenced duties as. science lecturer, and, that the Department had approved of the appointment of an assistant lecturer in English and history for the remainder' of the year. '■ • . ' The report was received, and it was resolved to recommend the appointment of Mia* G. Batchelor as lecturer in English and history. Consideration of the appointment of an art master was further- deferred, owing to the non-receipt of required' information from the Department. It was reported that Mr W. I. Anderson had been appointed caretaker. Manual Training. The Supervisor of Manual Training (Mr R. Grant) reported that during the sohool period all work had been carried out satisfactorily. The Department had granted £l2 5s for the purchase of a sewing machine and an electric iron for the Methven centre. Since the previous meeting the Christchurch Gas Company had supplied the Phillipstown centre with a "New World" gas range; thus each of the three City centres was equipped with a gas range, free of charge, by the company. In furtherance of the Board's arrangements, Messrs Spencer, Winsor and Grant waited on a meeting of the Reserves Committee of the Selwyn Plantations Board on May 81st, regarding the securing of the use of a block of land for forest tree oulture The deputation was well received, and it was understood that a block of land would be placed at the Board's disposal for treeplanting purposes, but nothing official would be communicated to the Beard till after the June meeting of the Selwyn Plantations Board. Agriculture. Mr J. Moodie (Chief Agriculture Instructor) said that with regard to the forestry work a number of schools, had two-year-old trees ready for transplanting, but in few instances bad they more than would supply local' demands. At several schools to which seed was supplied the work was more or less a failure mainly because the teachers did not, or would not, go to the little extra trouble required to make it a success Most of the failures, however, arose, through not taking some steps to prevent birds destroying the seedlings. It was reported that two meetings oi householders had been held in oonnexion with the following schools, but that no committees had been elected. The following gentlemen had been recommended as commissioners Domett, Mr Alexandei M Hyde; Eyreton, Mr H Bennett; Maneamannu, Mr C. Woodhouse-Lee, Ngaiere, Messrs J. Donaldson and G. Gibson; Paroa Messrs J. N Lawson, H. C. Sumner, and J. Flaherty. The householders of the Glenavy and Yaldhurst School Districts had failed to return committees as protests asainst want of support on the part of the Board. Mr Thompson moved that the members for those district* promote public meetings to seek explanations of the position, as it was possible that the attitude of the Board had been misrepresented. The motion was earned.
