TECHNICAL COLLEGE ! NEEDS. DISCUSSED BY BOARD. The attention of the Canterbury Education board was drawn to the urgent necessity of providing more accommodation tor the ever-increasing, numbers of students who desired to enrol lor instruction in both the Technical High cJchool and the evening classes in a letter from the Director, which was considered at yesterday's meeting of the board. The Manual and Technical Committee repoi teu that it had to forward a copy of the letter to the Department, and ask it to define its prupusetl policy with regard to technical schools and junior high schools. If the present policy was to remain unaltered, the Department was to be urged, to e»um._iMi another technical high school in Christchurch. Mr R. Wild was surprised that so much American equipment was to be seen at tie Colfege, particularly typewriters. He was impressed with the work done, and recognised the need for more assistance. "While not wishing to depreciate any other high school,'' said Mr E. .. Andrews, the representative of the Technical College Board of Governors on the Board, "the Technical High School holds its own with any other secondary school in academic education. Perhaps it would be saic •na should not have catered for academic education, but it was forced upon them. We have some in the high places in education in New Zealand, who belittle technical schools, and say that they should keep to purely technical work, but this would reduce it to a night school. At present there are over 2000 attending the evening and yet the srrant has is absolutely overcrowded. _ A huge mistake was made in bnildinc on so small a ground. It would be possible to secure more land there only by purchasing very expensive sections. It is fe't that the time has come when with the popularity of the ar-h'H ""me relief must be 'given to it. It is not an easy matter to acnii'Ve sites and now a site is available, I am pleased the Board has put this clause in encnnmp'incr the Government t* further technical education in Christchurch." The report was adopted.
