OBITUARY.
1 MR WILLIAM M'BRIDE. I (SPECIAL TO THE JBESB.) . j TIMARU, June 18. j Alter a long illness, Mr j "William Mcßride, of Timaru, passed i away oil Thursday, leaving a widow land a family of two grown-up daughters to, mourn their loss. Deceased, who was well and favourably known throughout this, district and ateo in various parts of the Dominion, was born in Timaru 50 years ago, being the eldest sou of the late Mr Samuel McBride. When he completed bis education he was apprenticed to the jewellery trade, which line of business he followed with, success all his life> ultimately buying out his first employer, Mr Robert Ferguson, of the firm known as Bower and Ferguson. The late Mr Mcßride was exceptionally fond of music and was ever ready to give his services for worthy causes. He was also a fine dancer, taking part for a number of years in the musical and dancing sections of- the South Canterbury Caledonian Society, of which body he was president from 1911 to > 1913. Although ha relinquished office in the latter'year, ho continued to take an interest in the society's, work and was an active member of-the Council of the society for many years. Other branches of sport that the late Mr Mcßride took an active interest in were deerstalking and fishing, and he was ever in touch with the work of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. He was president of that society in 192-1-22, and on resigning office was- elected a supernumerary member of the Council. In Masonic matters Mr Mcßride held an excellent record. He was a Past Master of Caledonian Lodge No. 16 and assisted as Provincial Grand Master from 1921 to 1923, in which year he was elected Provincial Grand Master, succeeding Right Worshipful Bro. F. Cv B. Bishop. This position he held up til] the time of his death. He was also a Past Chief Ranger of Court Southern Cross No. 3123. A.Q.F. In addition to the activities mentioned, Mr Mcßride was keenly interested in the Savage Club, having held office as Chief Savage. He was also a vice-presi-dent, of the Timaru Main School Old Boys' Association. He was ever, ready to give his services for the advancement of the town, being, just prior to the illness which. led up to his death, prominently.associated with the Shopping Week movement. MR F.NOTLEY MEADOWS. In musical and other circles much regret was expressed yesterday when'it became known that Mr F. Notley Meadows had passed away at 3 o'clock tha.t morning. Mr Meadows'took an : active and keen interest in musical matters in Christchurch for many: years, until failing health compelled him to give up active participation in the affairs of the societies with which he was connected. Mr Meadows, was a son of Mr J. 0. Meadows, an English barrister, and was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, England.. He studied for the law, but owing to bad health, abandoned the idea of following that profession, lie came to Christciurch in 1879, and entered into commercial life. In 1886. he floated the. Central Dairy Company, of whioh he became secretary. He took.a Srominent part in the control of the oubert and Twopenny Exhibition in Hagley Park in 1 1881.. He managed early exhibitions in Wellington," Auckland, and Dunedin, and represented the New Zealand Government: at exhibitions in Launceston, Hobart, and Brisbane. In the early years of the present century, Mr Meadows was secretary of the Christchurch Operatic Society, and helped largely in the production by that Society of "The Mikado/' "lolanthe," and other operas. He was also secretary of the Te Waiata Musical Club, and of the operatic section of the Christchurch Natives' Association. He was a very old member of the Christchurch Liedertafel, and for many years was its secretary and treasurer, rle was one of th« original mei of the Christchurch Savage Club. He was a keen volunteer, and was a member of the College Rifles. For some years he was secretary of the • Christchurch Kennel Club, and of the.Liberty League, and he was a member of St. Augustine Masonic Lodge. Mr Meadows possessed a genial disposition, and made many friends in the City. The funeral will take place this (Saturday) afternoon at the Waimairi Cemetery, and will be attended, _it is expected, by members of the Liedertafel.
