ACCIDENT AT RACES.
! TO THE EDITOB. 0* "THE PRISS." Sir, —In reference to the accident 1 which occurred at the Ashburtori Trotting Club's meeting last Saturday, and in reference to the letter appearing in your issuo of this morning above the signature of "A Lover of Horses," I feel, in the absence of our president, Mr H, F. Kicoll, that I • should reply to the letter setting out the true facts of the unfortunate accident. They are as follows: The horso Ramaroa broke its I«{< in' the seventh race, at 3,cw p.m., and immediately steps were taken by the owner, Mr T. F. Thompson, the Senior-Sergeant of Police, and the club's honorary• veterinary surgeon, Mr J. Kerrigan, M.B.C;V.S. (I/.), to destroy the beast. This was duly effected by the police at 4.20 p.m., some time before the eighth race. No doubt, as a "Humane Killer' was used, the public heard no' detonation, and naturally concluded, the destruction had not been done. I would also like to mention that Mr Kerrigan' assured the officials that the horso was in no pain during tho 2o minutes which elapsed between the accident and its destruction.— Yours, etc., F. B. ROBILLIARD. Vice-president, A.T.C. Ashburton, April 28th.
