LIFE-SAVING IN SCHOOLS.

TO THE ZDITOB 07 'THE PRESS." Sir, —r cheerfully admit that in replying to Mr Struthers' letter in Saturday's "Press," I did not completeJy answer his arguments, as there was so much truth in them. In his comments on the report on life-saving in the schools, Mr Struthers, through not being present at, our meeting naturally missed the context • suppliied verbally, when the report was being discussed. In this, it was pointed out how much better for the' Society if the Sir John Hall and Monica Thacker Shields were competed for on points of awards gained by tbe whole school, instead of having a few school instructors, each polishing up a few expert pupils in the proficiency standard work. It was then explained that at present it was not possible to amend these conditions, as tho'c&mmittee wished. It seems to me it would be more satisfactory' if Mr Struthers, and other teachers interested, would accept an invitation to attend the next meeting of the .Society, when the matter could be gone into more fully, than is possible in the public Press. The Life-saving Society is most anxious to co-operate with the secondary schools in this matter, the primary schools at present being quite satisfied with the position.—Yours, etc., KENNEDY BASSETT, Chairman Royal Life-Saving Society. Sumner, April tilth.
