POLICE UNIFORM.
MINOR ALTERATIONS. (srzcui, to "thi press.") WELLINGTON, April 28. There is soon .to be a slight difference in the dress of the constable on the beat. Instructions have been, issued abolishing the two "patch"' pocketß.on the breast of the jackets of sergeants and • constables. That the pockets become unsightly is one reason why they are being done away with, but a more substantial reason is that they afford refractory prisoners a grip which they are not slow to use when resisting arrest. . An order has also been made discontinuing the use of • capes in wet weather. To compensate for their loss the .ordinary waterproof will be reinforced about'.the shoulders. The capes, it is pointed out, also are a hindrance to the police in a tussle. "I want to preserve the smart appearance of the. police," says Mr W. B McEveney, Commissioner of Police, "and at the-same time to prevent uniforms from providing facility for resistance when arrests are being made."
