TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the North Canterbury Racing Club's Autumn Meeting close on April 30th. Acceptances for the "Waverley Racing Club's Winter Meeting and for the Marlborough Racing Club's Autumn Meeting close on April 30th. Nominations for the Forbury Park T.G. 1927 New Zealand Sapling Stakes close on Friday at 5 p.m. Advices from Sydney state that David has been definitely retired from the turf, and will do stud duty next season.

Since the Sydney Easter Sales, Georgo Price lias secured two new patrons, in Messrs S. Brunton and N. Falkiner. For the former, ho will train the Rossendale —Maltine filly and for the latter the Magpie—Queen Ingoda filly. Mr C. B. Kellow, who is on his way to England, was interviewed at Adelaide, and said Heroic might winter at that city. Relative to that horse's price when offered at auction in Sydney, Mr Kellow said the reserve was 20,000 guineas, and he was really glad he was not sold. Well, at the reserve mentioned, thero was little likelihood of Heroic finding a buyer. The chestnut is now sure of a lot of weight at any distance, aud, though he is sure to' win more weight-for-age races, 20,000 guineas would take a deal of getting back. If he won that much, it would increase his earnings to over £53,000. Of course, his value as a stud horse must he taken into consideration, but though in breeding, galloping ability, and conformation' he has so much to recommend him, imported borses always, have the call (over those bred in Australia, even though, like Heroic, they may be the i progeny of an English sire and dam.. Iu summing up the prospects for next season, "Pilot," in the Sydney "Referee," predicts that unless New Zealand unearths something specially good, Windbag, Heroic, Manfred, and Valicye should, between them, win most 'of the weight-for-age races at ltaftdwick, Flemingfcon, and Caulfield. When the New Zealander, Royal Tea, won the Youthful Stakes at the City Tattersall's Meeting on April 17th he started second favourite, and ridden by J. Munro, won easing up by two lengths. The Tea Tray gelding's success added another winning bracket to George Price's list. The success of Roval Tea will probably lead to the sale of his sire to an Australian buyer. An offer of five thousand guineas was made,, but that was below his New Zealand owner's valuation.

In the City Tattersall's Cup on April 17th, Te Monanui was installed favourite on the machine, but could only finish a moderate fourth, although he ran better than at any other time since his arrival in Australia. Runnymcde was the absolute outsider of the field: in the race, and raced accordingly. He did not show any lameness, but seems to have lost the galloping ability which caused New Zealanders to rate him so highly. Heroic is going to Adelaide for the weight-for-age races, and he should win "any in which he runs. There now seems little fear of his being left at the start in anything. Cairns thoroughly understands liim, and in one race at Bandwick demonstrated that it was unnecessary to have him directly facing the barrier- in order to get him away smartly. When the other horses jumped, Heroic, although at a slight disadvantage, went with them.

The South Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting will open at Wash- j dyke to-day, and be concluded to-mor-row. The principal event, the Timaru Cup Handicap, has attracted sixteen starters. Sun Up and Tarletou from A. McAulay's stable will both, be started, and as they benefited by their northern trip at Easter, should run prominently. Tarleton won the Cup last veax with 8.13, and his weight today has been dropped to 7.12, so that ho is given every opportunity of repeating his performance. Deucalion has been doing surprisingly good work on the tracks of late, and he will have many admirers. Fresco is certain to command public support on his forward running in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton at Easter, when he was close up to the placed horses, and he_ will probably go out favourite. Geranial will carry the confidence of the soutfiem speculators, while Prince Feroua's chances are seriously considered by the, West Coast contingent. The top-weight, Mountain Lion, has proved' that he can carry weight over the distance by beating Tarleton and Fresco' in the Waimate Gup last taonth. his burden then being 9.2, and with F. E. Jones in the saddle to-day, he must bo given a chance. The field for the Smithfield Handicap of sis furlongs is comprised of some good sprinters in Miss Minerva, Volant, The Harp, Corn Money, Centrepiece, Eaton Bells, and Booster. The last-named has been stationed at Riccarton since the Easter Meeting, and has done satisfactory work. Ho show-, ed at that meeting that he can gallop fast by winning the Gimcrack Handicap in 1.12 1-5, carrying 8.3, and he has only to reproduce that performance today to be hard to dispose of. Volant and Centrepiece are other Easter winners to be reckoned with, and they will both command respect. Favouritism will probably rest , with Miss Minerva, The Harp, or Booster. Carnot will have the chance to recoup his new owner for his outlay, in the Rosewill Hack Handicap. Pink Note, Receipt, Kilris, and ObGgio are others that will all be enquired for on the machine, while Philanderer and Calcite will improve on their previous displays. Los Ambus is at the head of the list for the Doocaster Handicap, and fit and well, he would be the public choice, but recently he has been showing signs of soreness in front, and may not be able to do himself justice. Carnot may be started in this in preference to the previous event, and if so will be well supported. Para, Retrospect, and Cbrinthic are all worthy of consideration Speculation on the Electric Stakes, for two-year-olds and upwards, will be evenly distributed, favouritism probl ably resting with Arrowmir, Serotina, and Asauranoe. ... »

The Tekapo Hurdles Handicap will provide the good field of twelve, with the well raced Tenterfield holding pride of place in tho handicap. The field will not be very formidable, and the chestnut gelding should hold them safe, with Red Kriss as his most dangerous opponent. The aged Kipling is certain to be favourite for the Otipuft Steeplechase, while the ex-Aucklander, King Abbey, will have an army of followers, but may not outstay BobrikofF's half-brother. The omission of a few words in a recent paragraph in regard to T. F. Quinlivan's retirement, made it read as if that trainer had had horses for tho Brothers Riddiford. In fact ho took over Mr Eric Riddiford's horses only, on the dissolution of partnership of Messrs Eric and Vivian Riddiford. Shine Soon, who won the Farewell Handicap at Auhburton, is unlikely to fulfil his engagements at Forbury Park. J. Seibel is carrying his arm in a sling as the result of tho fall he received with Fight Ever at Ashburton, and it will be a few weeks before ho will be able to follow his calling.

(rBJCSS ASSOCIATION KLBGEAM.) HASTINGS, April 27. Considering the long, dry spell here, the training tracks are in excellent order. Although a* yet very few visiting horses havo arrived, the work accomplished this morning was of an interesting nature. Most work was Olympio trotted round at half-pace. , , , Megan, looking very robust, cantered twice round. She appeared a bit sore. Royal Damon went a lound at hall-pace and then went fast over six furlongs. Grand Knight trotted onee round on the inner gra«» and was given a. good working gallop on the plough. Hillation, Little River, and Road Hog were companions over a nv.le covered in 3.44. Coot and The Strand ran half a mile m 50 8-5. Hukuwai, Mount Clyde, • and Caluna galloped five furlongs in 1.4, tho former doing best.

Haurangi galloped sir furlongs in 1.17 3-5. Civilform did half-pace work. Gaze, Malatour, and Perle de Leon were associated in a. gallop at three-quarter pace once round. Gaee and Perle de Leon went a further round at a fast pace, Gaze finishing well. A number of others, including jumpers, were out' doing steady work. i Glentruin is expected from Woodville to-day.
