ACCIDENTS AT RACES.
TQ THE EDITOR OF "THE PBESS." Sir.—-In reference to the Trotting Meeting held at Ashburton last Saturday, the negligence shown by the stewards concerning the accident which happened in the one mile and a quarter harness race, was disgraceful. Hydaspes fell, bringing down llamaroa, and five other contestants. Ramaroa suffered a complete fracture of the near foreleg, ana was left to stand in ngonv till after the last race, before ho was destroyed, fully an hour having elapsed. If such cruelty to dumb animaJs as was in evidence in this case is allowed, it is high time that the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took action.—Yours, etc., A LOVER OF HORSES.
