THE COMPETITIONS.
FESTIVAL OPENS ON FRIDAY. The musical and elocutionary clauses of the Chriatchurch Competitions Society have bees' very well filled, and it is expected that exoellentrecitals will be the'rule throughout tie sessions. This is the sixteenth festival held bythe society, and eaoh succeeding year has seen an improvement in the standard of work Atd an extension in the number and variety pi' the classes. On Friday next ses<lollß will be held in the morning and afternoon, and in the evening the festival will be officially opened in the Caledonian Hall at 7.43 o'clock. Many clever yojng performers have entered, and in tho senior classes there will be keen competition among competitors .from Christchurch and other cities. Arrangements have been made for the sale of season tickets, which may be used throughout the festival,, which will extend over three weeks, during which there will be morning, afternobn,' and. evening sessions. The society is confidently" looking forward to a successful festival, which should appeal to the publio ,who_ are interested in the development of '.musio, ekoution, and fancy dancing.
