PLUNKET SOCIETY.

MOUNT SOMERS BRANCH. j At the annual general meeting of the Alt. Somers branch of the Plunket society there was a large attendance of members and intending members, also Airs Laing, president of the Ashburton branch, Aliss Coward, secretary, and Miss Joan Nicoll. Mrs Laing was voted to the chair. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £27 Is lid. The nurse's report for the year was read and adopted. It stated that visits to the rooms were 78, visits to_ homes 7"2, new cases naturally fed 5, artificially led 2. The general health of the babies had been good. The secretary then read her report for the year, "which stated that the nurse had visited twice a month during the year. The number of visits to the rooms this year had not been as good as last year, partly on account of there not being so many babies in the district, and also on some who had babies not realising the benefit they would derive by a Plunket nurse's advice. The main cause of the decrease in visits to the rooms was that the nurse did a great deal of visiting i" the homes, as her report showed, cue home being about seven miles away. The nurse has been conveyed to Mayfield most of the year in taxis, except for a trip taken by Mrs C. I. Peter and another, by the Rev. P. Beresford, to whom the committee were indebted. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mrs R. Nosworthy; acting-vice-president, Mrs Nell (these were elected unanimously); vice-presidents, Mesdnmes W. Morgan, W. Comyns, Peache, and R. B. Neill; secretary, Mrs Jones; treasurer. Mr P. H. Jones; committee, Alesdames Alexander, Gorrie. Comyns, Hepburn, Nell, Hunter, Stevens, "Becklev, Jewell, L. Prebble, R. B. Neill, R. Nosworthy, Bland, Aliss A. Webster. The following ladies were added, subject to their consent: Alesdames Stringer, E. Burgess. Totty, D. Syme. Sawyers, Goldsmith (2), Rutherford, Rentier, Allan Smrth (Springburn and Staveley), Airs Williams (Alt. Somers), with power to add. A rote of thanks was passed to the secretary far her work during the year. Airs Laing gave an address on the work of the Society in general, and the ground the Society hope to cover in the future. The Plunket work was a national one, and was really a continuation of the war work in helping the .young-so that they might be an asset to their home and country when they were older. Airs Laing was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her address. The new committee will endeavour to appoint a delegate to attend each monthly meeting of the Ashburton Committee and keep in touch with the work. FANCY DRESS BALL AT WOODBURY. The grand carnival ball arranged by Mrs Blundell Hawkes in aid of the Library Queen was held at Woodbury on Tuesday evening, and the scene of frivolity and. lightheartedness will long be remembered by all present. Lords and ladies, clowns, black cats, ballet dancers, Greeks, Italians, Indians, French, and Spanish ladies mingled together in happiest spirit. The uall went with a. swing from the start to finish, the music beinjr provided by Campbell's Orchestra, from Timaru. Extras were played by Miss Loughnan and Mr Gibbs. The hall was most artistically decorated with festoons of greenery, bowls of flowers, and autumn foliage. The walls looked particularly effective, panelled in white with handpainted festoons of flowers and fruits especially designed for the occasion by Miss Drummond Sharpe. The grand march, which took place later in the evenjng, showed the many beautiful dresses to the best advantage. Supper was served in an adjoining room on tables decorated with pink sweet peas and shaded candles. During the evening, votes were taken for the most effective costumes, the results being: Miss Blundell Hawkes 1, Miss Doris Barker 2, and Mr Neil was awarded the gentleman's prize. Special prizes were awarded to two Black Cats—Miss Audrey Hewitt and Air Jef. Peter. At the close of the evening, Air Sinclair Thomson, in a happy little speech, called for cheers for the hostess and the Library Queen (Aliss Blakiston). The singing of the National Anthem terminated' a most enjoyable evening. Airs Blundell Hawkes wore a handsome Russian dress with striking headdress of pearls and sequins.
