1 A letter has been received by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce from the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce alleging that electric conduit tubes and fittings made in Germany arc coming into the Dominion and are obtaining the benefit of the British preferential tariff. The secretary of the Wellington Chamber said that the Customs Department stated that it would appreciate details, especially the names of the firms in Great Britain against whom the improper practice was alleged; the representative of tho Customs Department would then investigate. Until -the allegations of wrongful declaration of British origin were substantiated, the Customs Department expressed doubt, as every care was taken to see that certificates of origin were authentic. Several members expressed the opinion that the statement practically amounted to a charge against a British firm of' making a false declaration. It was decided that the complaint be referred to the association of British Manufacturers and Agents.
