A statement that 17s was secured per skin by one trapper, who bad a process of his own for curing opossum skins, -iigainst Cs paid to the majority of trappers, was made at the Wellington Aclimatisation Society's meeting on Wednesday night. Mr J. S. Fleming, asked whether it would not be in the interest of the industry for all skins to be similarly treated. The "owner" of the process would not divulge it. "That would not prevent him getting the price," remarked a member; "there might be too many nicely cured skins," remarked another member. The chairman (Mr L. 0. H. Tripp) said that the society's rangers endeavoured to give all trappers advice on the curing of skins. The ]7s skins in question, said a member who had seen them, were as soft as chamois , leather. Glycerine was suggested as the possible foundation of the exclusive process, and an angler present contributed the interesting information that gut casts kept in pure glycerine lasted interminably. The death is announced, destitute and forgotten, of M. Belmont, said to be the inventor of the internal combustion engine, and the first man to drive a motor-car on the highways.
