ARCTIC WAVE.
AMERICA SUFFERS. MANY DEATHS. (BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN A3SD N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) NEAV YORK, January 29. The United States and Canada are shivering under a wave of extreme cold and terrific winds, which reached a velocity of 84 miles an hour. The suffering has been increased in some localities hy the shortage of coal, due to tho strike of anthracite miners. The police are sheltering the homeless. Only parts of the south have escaped the zero weather. The following temperatures have been recorded: —Montreal 11 dogrees below zero, Winnipeg 19 below, Port Arthur 28 below, New York zero, Philadelphia six above, Northville, Vermont 16 below. Twenty deaths have already beon reported, mostly from files duo to overheating, several from exposure, and one through the explosion of an overheated furnace. Argentina, in the meantime, is suffering from a heat-wave.
