MISSING MAN.
JUMPED INTO WAIMAKARIRI RIVER.
About 5.40 p.m. on Saturday, a man was seen to pull up his .car on the Coutts's Island side of the Catting bridgo at Kaiapoi, to climb through the raili'igs of the bridge, and jump into the river. Two motor-cyclists, on reaching the bridge, looked downstream, and saw the man apparently swimming. They thought they saw him regain his footing, but immediately he was washed away again. The mail was last seen by a fisherman on the Belfast side of the river, at the point where the cutting joins the maiD stream. He was floating face downwards and disappeared. The Kaiapoi police were notified, and Constables Holmes and Warren, with Constable Moore, of Belfast, searched till late at night, but without success. The unavailing search was continued early yesterday morning and throughout, the clay, with the assistance of several civilians. The seekers were hampered by tTie dirty water and the overhanging protective willows on the side of the river where it was "expected the body might, be found.
