■N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. NEW RECORDS ESTABLISHED. (rRES3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NAPIER, January 29. The New Zealand swimming championships were concluded to-night, before another record gathering of the public. Splendid swimming was witnessed,* and the public saw two further New Zealand records broken, A. E. Baird (Auckland) clipping 7 4-ssec off the 440 yds men's record, and W. Cameron (Wellington), reducing the 100 yds intermediate boys' record by l-ssec. Results:— 440 Yards Men's Championship. New Zealand record, smin 38 3-ssec; by D. D. Pelham (Auckland) ; holder of championship, D. Pelham. A. E. Baird (Auckland) .. 1 1). Lindsay (Canterbury) .. u D. Pelham (Auckland) . . 3 Time, orain 30 -4-osec A Now Zealand record. Also started: J. Enwright (Auckland), J. Cameron (Wellington). Enwright led the field a,way from a beautiful start, clo3ely followed by Pelham. The sixth lap saw Polham leading Lindsay by three yards, with Baird third. At this stage Cameron and Enwright retired. On th» ninth lap Pelham surrendered his leac to 'Lindsay, with Baird coming up fast. Twenty yards from home Baird shot ahead, to win by three yards from Lindsay, with Pelham ten yards back third. Baird swam a perfectly timed race, clipping 7 4-ssec ofl the previous record of smin 38 3-ssec. 440 Yards Ladios' Championship. Xew Zealand record time. 6min 83ec, by Misa Shand (Canterbury), holder oi Championship, Miss P. Page (Auckland). Miss P. Page (Auckland) .. 1 Miss J. Bell (Auckland) .. 2 Miss E. Stockley (Auckland) .. S Time, 6min 21 2-ssec. Also started - Misa L. Copplestone (Canterbury). Misses Page, Stockley, and Bell kept each other company over the first 150 yards, when Misa Page established a slight lead. At the half-way mark Miss Page still held the advantage from Miss Bell, who was two yards behind. Miss Copplestone here retired. With a lap to go Miss Page increased her lead and touched three yards ahead of Miss Bell. Miss Stockley was twenty yards awav third.

100 Yards Boys' Intermediate Championship. New Zealand record 61 l-53ec, by N. Dowsett (Wanganui); holder of championship, N. Dowsett (Wanganui). First heat—G. Bridson (Auckland) 1, L. Fitch (Canterbury) 2, W. Panman (Taranaki) 3. Time, 63 2-saec. Also started— W. Rylands (Wanganui). The winner led all the way and won by several feet. Second heat—W. Cameron (Wellington) 1, C. Field (Ashburton) 2, O. Matthews (Wanganui) 3. Time, 64 l-ssec. Also started —H. Rolls (Rawke's Bay). Cameron led all the way and won easily. Final—W. Cameron (Wellington) 1, G. Bridson (Auckland) 2, L. Fitch (Canterbury) 3. Time, Glsec—a New Zealand record. Also started —W. Penman (TaTanaki), P. Matthews (Wanganui), H. Field (Ashburton). Cameron early captured the lead, and at the 66 2-3 yds mark had an advantage of two yards. In the run home Bridson challenged, but Cameron, going strongly, sustained his lead, and in a beautiful finish lowered the record by l-ssec. A yard separated first and second. Fitch was n close tMrd.
