The story of. an amazing encounter between -a constable, a blacktracker, and a gin, and the six native prisoners of the constable, flho was escorting them, iji contained in an official report received by the Commissioner of Police. Const tble Walter had six blacks chained together, and with a gin and tracker was Ukinjr them to Fitzroy, crossing from fie far north-west. Wlilo tho constablo dismounted to adjust ono of the packs on a horso, the natives made a concerted attack. Walter drew his revolver and fired into, tho ground, but this did not deter the .natives, who rushed him, throwing stones, and wielding sticks. Walter's revolver jammed after tho se«ond shot, and he was forced to retreat. He was receiving a bad handling when the gin and tracker camo to his assistance. "With his strength failing, the consbable managed to free the revolver aind to shoot one of the attackers in tfhe stomach. The constable then colLipsed. Tho remainder of tho natives, frightened' at tho fate of their companion, surrendered and were secured and chained to a tree. The native who was shot subsequently succumbed. •« The tracker, gin, and constablo wero badly injured but not dangerously.
