Walter's revolver jammed after tho se«ond shot, and he was forced to retreat. He was receiving a bad handling when the gin and tracker camo to his assistance. "With his strength failing, the consbable managed to free the revolver aind to shoot one of the attackers in tfhe stomach. The constable then colLipsed. Tho remainder of tho natives, frightened' at tho fate of their companion, surrendered and were secured and chained to a tree. The native who was shot subsequently succumbed. •« The tracker, gin, and constablo wero badly injured but not dangerously.
