SANDERS CUP.

TRIALS AT LYTTELTON. WIN FOR LINNET. The second raco of a series to select a boat and crew to represent Canterbury at the forthcoming race for the Sanders Memorial Cup, to be held at Dunedin, was sailed at Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon in first-class yachting weather. There was a stiff, fullsail breeze from the north-east, and the sea was smooth except for a short jobble. Five boats again faced the starter —Linnet -nd (R. Sinclair), Betty (G. Andrews), Usher (C. Woodward), Secret (A. T. : Round), and Jiagpio (F. Collins). It was a great race from start to finish, especially between Linnet and Betty. Betty finished 2miti 35sec ahead of Linnet, but on the official launch arriving l back tho judges Announced that Betty had been disqualified for fouling the Tarsons Rock buoy when- rounding, . and they therefore awarded the race to Linnet. It is stated, unofficially, that Betty would hare had to stay again to avoid touching, which would have cost her at least two minutes. It was hard luck for the Redcliffs boat, as she sailed a great race, and would very likely have won iu any case. The Bace. The race commenced at 3 p.m. Linnet was first across, closely followed by Betty, and then Usher. Magpie and Secret crossed the mark beforo the gun, and had to rccross,. losing about half a minute. Usher, Magpie,* and Secret made a long board to tho quarry. Linnet and Betty took tho same course until opposito the quarry, and then Linnet went about, followed by Betty, and fetched tho bend of tho pier. Betty finished this manoeuvre to windward of Linnet. The ■ two fought out a series of short boards in the corner at Officer's Point, Betty maintaining her windward position. The two then made a long slant to the island. The Usher, Secret, and Magpio held until oft Diamond Harbour, when, the Usher left the others, and set out on a starboard tack. This put her. well ahead of the other two, and off tho island Betty, Linnet, Usher, and Socret were well together. Magpie had dropped behind, and was sailing her'own .course. A, series of short boards resulted in tho Linnet getting tho lead again. Magpie, rnnning a good last,, came down the wind with a sudden burst of speed, arid then caused a mild sensation for the crowd on tho pjcr. Close in to the rooks she commenced to tako in her spinnaker, bnt want of co-operation between the two members of tho crew engaged in this work caused it to sky wildly, an,d then go about forward of the mainsail. , . Collins shifted the helm over to try and free it, and then Magpio heeled over, gracefully, emptying her crew into the water. No Jaunehcs .were near, .. and the "boat capsized" signal was quickly flying at the time-ba11...
