Viscount and Lady Allenby left London on Thursday morning on their trip to Australia and New Zealand (states a London cable message). Officially opened by Mrs Eolleston, who was introduced by the vicar, the Eev. H. T. York, the fete was well attended, the' grounds being crowded. Children with their and others riding gailydecorated bicycles and tricycles, formed a pretty-procession, headed 'by Derry's Band. There were the usual number of stalls and afternoon tea parlours. During the afternoon Mrs Eolleston was presented with a bouquet of, roses. The-executive of the Pilgrims' Association have' extended an' invitation to the Plunkeb Society, to take part in the Historical. Pageant, to be held on December 12th in connexion with the Anniversary, celebrations.

A very enjoyable party was given at., their residence by- Mr> and Mrs F. H. Greenwood, Little Rakaia, on Friday evening, to celebrate the fifteenth birthday of their eldest son, Alexander. The evening was Bpent in various games, gramophone selections, and progressive euchre. On, the supper table' was a two-tier birthday cake, with 15 lighted candles. The ladies' euchre prizes were won. by Miss Delphie Byron and Mrs D. Byron, the gentlemen's prizes going to .Mr H. J. Greenwood and Mr A. C. Greenwood. RECITAL. The Parish Uoom at Sumne r was filled to overflowing on Saturday afternoon, when Mrs AV.. L. Cook ajul her pupils entertained a largo number of friends at a song and pianoforte rental. The room had been converted into a cosy drawing-room, and during an interval a dainty r.fternoon tea was dispensed, interest was taken in each item, especially those of the tiny tots. who.played their pieces'with much expression and showed a marked absence of eelf-consciousncss. MISS BESSIE MAGDONALD'S RECITAL. Miss Bessie Maodonald is to be congratulated on the success of the two recitals given on Friday and Saturday evenings by herself and pupils as a wind-up to the season oil behalf of St. Saviour's Orphanages. Miss Macdonald maintained to a greater degree than ever the very • high standard of excellence which always characterises her productions, and the cleverness of the young people under her tuition was amply demonstrated each evening by the rounds of applause which greeted every item, numerous encores being demanded. At the close of the recital on Saturday, the affectionate appreciation of parents, relatives, and friends was shown, by. the scores of bouquets, dolls, toys, balloons, and dozens of boxes of chocolates, which were handed up to. the stage and rapidly 'distributed amongst jthe delighted recipients^ Miss Macdonald, who wore a. charming shell-pink brocaded satin tunic over a pleated georgette sjkirt, was herself ' not forgotten, and was received with great cheering when coming forward to receive many tokens of goodwill and affection —not least of which was one which came from her own pupils. Mrs Adam, who had come specially from Australia to take over the musical side of the recitals, also shared in the distribution of good things. Then all present joined in the National Anthem, which closed a very successful evening.

BALL AT MOUNT SOMERS. The returned soldiers' fourth annual hall was held in the Soldiers' Memorial Hall. Mount Soxners, and proved a creat success in every way. The hall was crowded, to its utmost capacity, and visitors were present from Geraldine, Christchurch, Ashburton, Melhven, and all the nearby districts. A delicious supper was laid in the marquee adjoining the hall and was supervised by the wives of the returned soldiers and other helpers, who deserve credit for the excellent repast. The hall was decorated with red. white, and blue streamers hune from the centre of the roof. Tho Union Jack, which was made and presented to the Hall Committee by Mrs John Hood, was hung at the back of the stage. Music was supplied by Chapman's "Orchestra, extras being played by Mrs Wood, Miss Wood, Mjss Morgan, and Mr E. Beckley. The M.C.'s were Messrs L.. Hood .and D. Stevens. Durinc the evening those present observed Wo minutes' silence in honour of fallen soldiers. The grand march, in which sixty-five couples took part, was led by Mt and Mrs I*. King.

MERIVALE PARISH FETE. Although the weather was not in its kindest mood, there was a large attendance at the Mcrivalc Parish Fete, which was held in the beautiful grounds of Mr W. 1. Carney, Papanni road, on Saturday afternoon. Stalls erected beneath trees contained useful articles which found a ready sale, and side-shows also did good business. Another attraction was tennis, which wa.s plaved on the courts of Mr Carney. Mrs Peter Wood, and Mr F. Hobbs. whose properties adjoin. St. Leonard's Square, Sumner, presented a- very lively appearance on Saturday afternoon, when the pupils of the Sumner School, together with their narcnts and friends, assembled for the. school snorts.
