A NEW INDUSTRY.
PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION, (special to "the peess.") DUNEDIN, November 28. "When Mr 1\ W. IPurkert, Enginecr-in-Chicf of the Public Works was in Dunedin about three weeks ago, after a, visit to the Sounds district, he said that the Department -was prepared actively to interest itself in exploring that region in regard to its water-power possibilities, and indicated that a survey might be undertaken before long. It is now learned that the promoters of a company which has been, formed for the purpose- of extracting nitrates by means of hydro-electric energy are" W leave Dunedin on Monday- for Manapouri and Doubtful Sound, accompanied bv an officer of the Public Works Department. ' Tho Department has arranged to begin the survey in tho Te AniiU-MaE.apouri district. The project of harnessiing one or more of the' numerous waterfalls is evidently to be pursued.
