HAWKE CUP.
WANGANUI V. TARANAKI. (riisss association tblbobah.) HAWKRA, November 28. The delightful uncertainty of cricket manifested itself to-day in the Hawke Cup match between Taranaki and Wanganui. At the end of the first innings the latter had a lead of 142, the scores being: Taranaki 14T, Wanganui 289. The chances of Taranaki making a stand to-day appeared remote. During the night and early morning there was a heavy rainstorm. The" weather cleared before the match was resumed, but remained uncertain, cold, and threatening during the afternoon. The Taranaki ba.snicn evidently found the wicket to their liking, and immediately began to score rapidly, succeeding in making the deficit with the loss of only two wickets. Monaghan (4;!), Nasmith (66), tho first batsmen, contributed largely to this result. Other good scores were mado by Lambert (47), Lay (35), and Cole (23). The innings totalled 216, leaving Wanganui 104 to win. This was accomplished with tho loss of five wickets. (Hutchison (35), Treadwcll (27 not out), and London (IS) being the best scorers. Tho winners gain the right to challenge Nelßon for the Hawke Cup. Scores: — TARANAKI. First Innings .. • • • • I*7 Second Innings.
