THE CLOCK TOWER.
DANGER TO TRAFFIC. At question time at the meeting of the City Council last night, suggestions were put forward which, if given effect to, would remove some of the bestknown landmarks in the City. ." The first was put forward by Cr. A. D. Ford, who asked if the Works Committee would consider the removal' of the Clock Tower. On account of the vast increase in motor traffic in Christchurch, the Clock Tower had become p, real danger to drivers in that particular locality. The Clock Tower had been ereeted a long time ago, but at present it was only "half a clock," and had ceased to chime He thought it would be a benefit to the City if it were removed; Cr E. H. Andrews, chairman of the Works Ccmmittse, stated that if the matter were brought up in Council it would have to. be considered by the Works Committee. So far the question of its removal had not oceurred to him. .'- A further suggestion was put forward by-Cr. A. McKellar, who expressed tho opinion that the conveniences opposite Tattersall's Hotel in Cashel street should also be removed, because they constituted a danger to traffic. Cr E R McCombs put forward another plea for '.he enlargement of the women's rest-room in the Square. She stated that on the Saturday after Show Dav a long quene had formed m front of the rest-room, and. it was two hours before a Gouneil official, "who had. to pay a visit to the parcels office, could reach his destination. The women's rest-room was greatly overtaxed, and she asked the Works Committee if it could provide adequate accommodation before the Christmas period. Cr. Andrews said it was a tall order to provide accommodation before Christmas, but perhaps temporary accomodation might be provided. He did not, however, consider that even this could be done.
