FORTY YEARS' SERVICE.

DISTRICT RAILWAY ENGINEER. ~ Mr A. J. McCredie, district'engineer for the New Zealand Railway Department for the northern area of. the South' Island, has retired on superannuation, after 40 years' service. Members of tho railway service made him a presentation at a farewoll gathering. . • % '. Mr R. S. Kent, Divisional Superintendent of the tsouth Island, presided. In presenting Mr McCredie with a Toll-top desk, an illuminated address, and a set of crystal for Mrs McCredie, he said he had Deen personally acquainted, with Mr McCredie tor 30 years, and no one knew, better than he his many fine qualities. Mr McCredie had been, associated with many important undertakings, and he had an excellent reputation'as an engineer. Many others spoke of Mr McCredie's sterling qualities. In reply, Mr McCredie said that it was one of the saddest days of his life when he had to relinquish association with such a splendid body of men. During his many years on the railway, he had .received the assistance of every (

man in the service. Bailwaymen were frequently' criticised but if the public realised the position the men would receive nothing but praise.
