RANGIORA. Mr V. E. Barton presided at the meeting of the committee of the bowl>nK, tennis, and croquet club on Tuesday night. Fourteen new members were elected, and two resignations were accepted. The treasurer's statement showed the recoi.pts for the month to' have been £ICS 17s lOd. H ", as resolved that representative ot the Press be admitted to meetings of whs committee in future. Mr W. A. Banks referred to the success of the opening day •proceedings «nd offered congratulations to the president and Mrs Barton. OMIHI. The card parses hare been held for several months were conl- - last week, when the prizes were won by Mr Ferguson (Mr Jones's gift) and Mr Burrows. AMBERLEY. The final euchre tournament in aid of the fiyids of the North Canterbury Caledonian Society was held ou Tuesday evening. The first prize was won by Mr A. J. "Watson, the second by Mrs H. H. Busch. and the third bv Mr G. Belcher. Though Mr Watson won the first prize (a i'at wether) he stated that the sheep would be sold at the next Amberley sale and the proceeds handed to the Society. After supper had l>een dispensed the hall was cleared for dancing. ASHLEY BANK. At the opening of the second season of the Ashley Tennis Club there was a largo attendance of members and visitors. Mr Peach (president), after welcoming the visitors, announced that Mr J. Bowbyes, whose ground the club is leasing, had very generously returned one pound of the first year's rental. He stated, too, that Mr Geo. Lilley had worked very hard to help get the courts in order for the opening day. Mr Bowbyes and Mr Lilley were accorded a vote of thanks. The ladies of the club dispensed afternoon tea. . CUST. At a meeting of the managers of St. David's Church, the Rev. B. Bannerman was in the chair. The Moderator, the Rev. W. R. Hutchinson, wrote stating that he had communicated with tho Oxford Congregation regarding the proposal to amalgamate tho two charges, but Oxford was opposed to the proposal. It was decided to ?.sk tho Moderator to call a further meeting of the congregation to discuss tho position. Arrangements were made to organise an egg afternoon for the orphanages, and to invito the Rev. Hide to be present to plead for the cause. FERNSIDE. A surprise party paid a visit to the. heme of Mr and Mrs C. E. Sutherland last week. A very ..enjoyable timo was spent by all in dancing, ganv?s. charades 'and competitions. ; The competitions wcro both won by Miss Jessie Milne. SOUTHBRIDGE. It took every inch of space at the SontHbridge Hall to provide foothold for the large number who attended the annual Labour Night dance. Visitors were present'from Christchurch, Dunssandel, Springston, Kilhnchy, Rakaia, D&rfield, 1-eeston, and all the surrounding districts. The hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers, balloons, ferns, and spring flowers.- Spirited dance music was supplied by Maodonald's Orchestra, Rakaia, extras being plaved by Miss G. McCartin ; Miss G. Kidd, and Miss M. Griffis. .Mr D. Finlaiy was M.C. A dainty supper •was handed round* LEESTON. ' The official opening of the 1925-26 season of'tho Lecston Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club took place in fine weather and. in the presence of a large gathering, including a number of visitors. The president, Mr R. M. Robertson, declared. the season open, and Mrs Robertson delivered the first bowl. Tho afternoon was spent in a doubles competition betweem teams led by the president and vice-president. Tho tennis players held, a working bee in preparation for the laying of the new courts, which are not expected to bo ready for some little time vet, tho continued rain last winter having hindered progress. A presentation of a'tennis racquet was made to Mr J. Purser in recognition of his services as secretary for the past seven years. Members of the club ■and visitors were the guests of the president and Mrs Robertson at afternoon tea.
TAI TAPU. A successful concert in aid of St. Paul's Church Mission Funds was held in .the, .To»» Hall. Owing to the efforts of Mrs Gordon Stanbury, who organised,, the concert, the fund will be considerably supplemented. The following contributed" to the programme:—Overture. Miss Suckling: songs and duets, Mesdames Alan McBean, J. Christie, and J. Mackenzie, Misses Hilda Jones, Jean Brown, Jean Mackenzie, Xita Shier. Lorna Dowker, Messrs Dowker and D. Suckling. The accompanist was Miss Suckling. At the conclusion- Mr Harry Kimber, who acted as chairman, thanked all who had assisted. Tho many friends of Mr W. L. Morgan, of the Tai Tapu Dairy Company staff, who has been ill for e time, will be pleased to know that he is now convalescent. A bazaar in aid of the Methodist Church Funds will be opened by Sir Heaton Rhodes this afternoon' in the Town Hall. A number of attractive .stalls have been erected, laden with good things at reasonable prices, which, should command a, ready sale. HORNBY-ISLINGTON. At the weekly euchre party in the Orange Hall. Hornby, the ham for top score was won by Mrs Simpson. Other prizes were awarded to Miss Burgess, Mrs Porter, md Mrs Hamilton, Messrs R. Kelly, G. Wendle, and J. Hamilton. CHORLTON-LITTLE AKALOA. On Saturday night there was a gathering of residents in the Chorlton Hall, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs H. McHale, who have sold their farm to Mr Clyde. Waghorn. During the supper interval Mr 10. Waghorn, on behalf, of the residents, presented Mr and Mrs McHale, with a monogramed travelling rug and inscribed silver teapot. The prizewinners for the cards were Miss K. Craw and Mr McHale, consolation prizes going to Miss Hunt (Pigeon Bay), and Mr C. Craw. Mr and Mrs H. McHale have gone for a tour of the North Island before settling down. On Wednesday afternoon, Mesdames Freest and Clarence Waghorn entertained about ' forty ladies at '"Milcrest."
On Thursday afternoon about twenty ladies accepted Mrs Arnold Shuttleworth's invitation to "Ngarauboe" to hear a Prohibition address by Miss Henderson, of Christ church.
On Saturday evening the your.g people of the district arranged a "kitchen" evening for Miss Marion Craw, whose wedding to Mr Dave Inch, of To Pirita, llakaia, takes .places on Tuesday next. The first part of the evening was taken un with a euchre tournament, Miss K. Craw and Mr J. Gardiner taking the first prizes; Miss Inch and -■• Mr G. Craw winning the consolation, prizes. % After suppei Mr K. Waghorn, op behalf of those present, asked the young couple to accept for their new home a,, collection of useful kitchen ; articles. Mr and Miss Sway'nc arc staying with their sister, Mrs It. J. Bailey. Mrs Evans, St. Albans, lias returned home after spending a, holiday with Mrs Ash ton.
Mrs Hunter, "Tho ltanche," who has been seriously ill, is now convalescent, and Miss Hunter is also quite well again. Mr and Mrs T. Grose and their little daughter are staying ."with Mrs A. SPRINGSTON SOUTH. Tho weekly, euchre tournaments conducted by the Social Committee were concluded ou. Saturday. The prizes were won hv Mrs C. J. Woods and Mr H. H. Napier.. On Monday evening a very successful social, under the auspices of tbo Gun Club, was held in tne Memorial Hall. The music was supplied by Quaife's Orchestra, and tho M.Q.'s were Messrs C. The local picnic resorts were well patronised over the week-end, especially the Sehvyn HutsThe rain which fell on Saturday and Monday will benefit tho grain crops as well as tho grass. It will also help to keep the surface of the land moist for the warm weather had baked the surface, and farmers found it difficult to work the land. The springs are still very high, and one farmer- states that in one of his ten acre paddocks there are twenty-five springs flowing. HORORATA. The Tennis Club's weekly euchre' tournament attracted a good attendance on Saturday night, and the following were the prize-wiuners:—Ladies: Miss Poll Olliver 1, Miss L. Bloom (Heathcote) 2; men: Mr W. O'Brien 1, Mr Davie 2. The tennis courts have recently been top-dressed. A meeting of the Sewing Guild was held in the parish room on Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesday night, Mr J. Connolly addressed a meeting in the Public Hall, Hororata. Mr D. Bruce was in the chair. The speech was warmly applauded, and on the motion of Mr Felton, seconded by Mr L. Darrett, a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.
