LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY. THIRD ROUND. (arEciix TO "THJ rMSS.") WELLINGTON, October 19. A perfect spring (lay, with a fast drying course, and already excellent greens improving, made excellent conditions for the third round of the Ladies' Golf Championship to-day, but the scoring was not of a high order in any of the matches. Mrs Cromb, a Miramar member, while playing in the Ladies' Golf Union bowl competition did the short "Potiki" hole (10(i yards) in one. Mii<s Withers (Gcraldine) bad the better of her game with Miss Petrie (Johnaonville) all the way through, 1 hough Miss Petrie would have given her a better match had she been able to putt. Miss Withers was steadiness itself in every department of tho game, with only two lapses. Miss Petrie was r> down at the Bth, playing badly after the first hole, but Miss Withers was short with her tee shot at the ninth, which landed in the rushes, and, failing to get out in two strokes, she gave up the hole. The 10th was halved. Miss Petrie took the 11th (353 yards) in a perfect 4. Miss Withers found the bunker with her second, played across the green with her third, and gave up the bole at the 13th. Miss Withers took a fine 3 with a l(3-foot putt, halved tho nest in 4, and won the 15th in 4-5. The Kith went to Miss Petrie for a perfect 4, and the 17th also in 6. Miss Wit hers's tee shot was in a bunker full of water at the last hole, and the penalty spoilt her chance of pulling up. Tn the Medal Round in the afternoon Miss Petrie did a fine 2 at the 152 yards 12th. Youth v. Experience. Miss V. Upbam, a 20 years old golfer, with no norves, a fine free swing, and a tremendous hitter for her slight weight, gavo M'.ss Muriel Pa.yton quite a close, contest, and should really have won had her putting been at all reliable. Miss Payton was not getting her usual length from tho tee, nor was she at all sure of direction, finding trouble all through tho course. Time and again Miss Pavton made up for erratic shots by deadly work with her ujashie and putter. She sank two pntts of over 20 feet, and her approachisg? *raß remarkably good. Miss TJpham, whoso timid putting bad her several holes down in the early stages of the game, squared the match at tho 7th. Both were on tho green in 3, hut Miss Upham sank a 15 foot putt over a ridge for an excellent 4 at a bogey 5 holo. Miss Upham's long brassie at the eighth landed just in tho bunker guarding tho green, Miss Payton taking the holo in 1 (ono up). At several halved holes Miss Upham had short putts for a win. but missed them. Better golf marked tho end of the game, the 16th being taken by Miss Payton in 3 —4. Miss Upham took the next, but Miss Payton won, 2 up, on the last green. Miss L. Quin (Eltham), sister of last year's amateur champion, was signally defeated by Mrs J. A. Cook (Dnnodin) who played the- long 4xm© well, and who was steadier on the greens. Miss S. Payton Beaten. Miss Jervis, a young Hutt golfer who recently did a. ladies' record for her own course, had nil the better of her game with Miss &. Payton, who put Mrs G. Williams out in the first round. Miss Jervis did a bogey round out in tho medal play in the afternoon, but crashed coming home. Miss K. Br is ted (Chpstcliurch) met her match early in her gajne with Mrs Dodgshun (Otago), Miss Bristed'e putting was weak, and her game generally lacked the finish of that of her more experienced opponent, who looks like fighting out tho finish with Miss Withers Or Mis« Chrystall. Mrs Orbell was not sure of her wodden shots, though accurate with her irons, and she was a little short in quite a number of approaches. Miss Chrysta.il had trouble on the greens, but played fine crisp golf otherwise. Miss Culling (Auckland) was all square with Miss Aeheson at tho Bth, and one dp at tho 9th. After a holo and hole journey out, in which Miss Culling nearly holed a 2 at the 209 yards 4th, and the difficult 387 yards 7th was halved in 4, Miss Culling waa one up at the turn. The 10th was halved. Miss Aeheson. won tho next, and the rest of tho holes were halved. Miss Upton had a close tussle with Miss Theomin, and won I up. , Following are results:— — j Miss Upton (Auckland) heat Mise Theomin (Otago), 1 up. Mre J. A. Cbok beat Miss Qui nil (Eltham), 5 and 3.
