A DOCTOR'S SACRIFICE. ———♦- - The following letter that recently appeared in the "Otago Daily Times" from the pen of Dr! F. R. ' Riley, F.R.C.S., li'ngjand: L.R.P.S., London: lecturer in'midwifery and gynecology,, University of Ctago, is of particular interest at the present time: If all the money spent in alcohol in New Zealand were invested in solid comforts,, what a different'country it would be! Instead -of the, temporary gratification conferred by alcohol, we should have better food, better furniture, better, housing, etc., and less* poverty and less wretchedness caused by alcohoUc excess are colossal. Not only that, but all too frequently the decent, tnriftv people, by means of taxes, doles, and bad'debts, have to support the families of those who drink to excess. Most business people know that if a man smells of liquor, in the morning, a bad debt is not very far away. The inefficiency caused by alcohol is beyond all calculation. All this is in the balance against the temporary gratifications of alcohol. I have no quarrel with those who honestly believe that Prohibition ■is not the remedv.-• Reports from America are so divergent and so confusing that itis difficult to arrive at a just estimate of' the results of Prohibition.' The truth: nrobably lies between the two' extremes. A recent American visitor,' Dr. \V, J. Mayo, one of the sanest and soundest Hiecr-I have ©Ver met, unhesitatingly, gave it as his opinio! that Prohibition was going to be a success, and that America would never go back on her decision. For myself I have-made up.mv mind ■that Prohibition is worth a trial. I am quite prepared .to give,.up what •little. alcohol 1 take,- if it is going to be for. the' good of the country; and 1 honestly believe Prohibition would be for the good of the country. I would prefer, however, that the question were settled by an overwhelming vote. If the. women of this country voted en bloc for Prohibition, there would be-an end of alcohol and all its results. For centuries women and their children have suffered indignities, hardships, and . miseries beyond telling, the direct result of intemperance on the part of the mem. Why they tolerate "it any longer is beyond my comprehension! No' doubt in the past they have been swayed by the pathetic "appeals of erring husbands. If they considered their own interests, they would put a good stiff face on it and settle the question once for all. —Advt.
