TRAMWAY FINANCE.
TO THE MITOB OP "THE T&E3S." Sir,—ln this morning's issue of "The Press" I tee allusion is' made to certain tramways in Groat Britain which, like those of our own city, show ■•!■ loss on the year's working. In contrast to these, the enclosed cutting from a. Yorkshire paper just received may he of some interest. From this it will bo seen that Halifax— -a. very hilly town, with trams to distant, and sparsely inhabited districts —is able to make a. profit of over £II,OOO, of which more than £SOOO was paid' in relief of the rates. A short time ago the Halifax Corporation reduced the fares by 2-5 per cent. 'ln Christchurch, faros are increase*- in order to make the system.' pay!— Yours, etc., F J ' CATER. t " [The following is the cutting enclosed :—"There was a profit on Halifax tramways undertakings, for the year ended March 31st last, of £11.626 compared with £9959 in 1924. The total expenditure was £213,141, against £214,860 in 1924. Among the payments of a special nature was £5452 to the- relief of rates. The receipts on the motor 'buses amounted to £5836, making a profit of £ioA, against £770 in the previous year. J
to TK3 EDITOR OF "TE-E F&ES3. Sir,—ln to-day's issue there appears an article relative to tramway affairs, which is only half the truth. These facte are. I shoiild una* ino -worth the consideration r 1 Board and »« Mted.-Yours, e «., GLis , TEGIA X.
