MIGRATION.

UNSUITABLE APPLICANTS

NEED FOR CAREFUL SELECTION

<BI CASLK—PBBSS ASSCCIATIOK —COPTaiGHT.) (aUSTBALUS ASD 5.Z. CABIOB ASSOCIATION.)

Received September 16th, 7.15 p.si.?

LONDON", September 15

Mr Colebatch ie returning to London after his migration tour. Having commented on the lack of suitable migrants offering in southern districts. he said that fortunately a larger number was offering in the Midlands and in Scotland. No difficulty had been experienced in filling the monthly requisitions of the States which were now assisting migrants. A considerable number cf families were offering, but there was no scheme at present in operation for their absorption. Regarding the method of selection, he said that while those chosen were a good class, likely to make useful agricultural workers and settlers, the general standard of those rejected, was bo inferior as to emphasise the necessity for tho most careful individual examination in all cases, in order to prevent the migration of men who would inevitably fail in AustraliaiLronditions.

Altogether the total offering numbered 169, of whom CO adults, 15 boys and eight girls had been accepted, subject to medical examinations. Twentythree had been accepted for nomination and 63 were unsuitable and rejected.

SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE.

ARCHBISHOP OF YORK'S APPEAL.

Rceivcd September 16th, 10.45 p.m.;

LONDON, September 15

The Archbishop of York has written to tho clergy of the Diocese urging them to bring the opportunities for overseas settlement before the people. Large numbers, especially tho younger men and women, are, he states, suffering in mind and body through want of opportunity, yet many opportunities are standing open across the seas. He could not believe that the spirit of energy, enterprise and adventure had died out or that things were different now from what they were when those who left in former times for the Dominions crossed the seas, not knowing wherethey went.
