allegations in victoria. MELBOURNE. August 13. In the Legislative Council an adjournment was moved by Mr Smith, who made sweeping charges of alleged maladministration of the Fohee e partment. He declare.! that graft and corruption were rife, particularly in the liecus ing branch, ami that hotel-keepers could break the trading laws so long as they were willing to bribe the police. He attacked the Government for allowing a certain Police Superintendent to resign, instead of holding an enquiry into his conduct. His motion was defeated. Mr Smith then gave notice to move for the appointment of a Select Committee of Enquiry. ? Mr Nicholson, late Police Commissioner, when subsequently interviewed, emphatically denied the charges. He said that where any irregularis had been found they had been effectively dealt with. The allegations against the licensing branch were unfounded. He defied Mr Smith to prove one instance of corruption.
