Bushell's pupils. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the performers. A flag match played on the Ashburton golf links yesterday'between members of the Ladies' Club resulted in favour of Mrs A. T. ->askefball matches between representative teams of Ashburton and South I'nnterburv primary schools were played yesterday. The- senior Rugby game resulted in favour of Ashburton by 12 points to 8. For Ashburton, Bradford ki:ked three penalty goal*, and iServm!;Pour secured a try. For the visitors Kde and Wells each obtained n try, ■ ne of which was converted bv Morrison. The junior game, after a hard tussle, resulted in a draw, each side (•biaining three points, these being secured. by A. Davies (South Canterbury), Mid Sliirlaw. (Ashburton). The senior basketball match resulted in favour of As'nburton by points to 3. and the junior went to South Canterbury by J-1 points to 2. Many and varied were the costumes at the "hh.nl'up" social held in the Alleutpn "school for the purpose of augmenting the bazaar fund. The president of the Sports. Club, Mr D. A. Morgan, presented the prizes, which were given by Miss M. McDowell, as follows:—Best ladies' costume, Miss M. Willers, as "Topsy"; best gentlemen's costume, Mr .T. Cannon, as "Hard Up." The judges were Mesdames K. ("jalbraith, and R. Buxton, and Mr 11. C. Percy. The music was supplied by Mr 11. Thompson, and a lucky-spot waits was won by Mr J. B. Mora, ami Miss Vesty. The proceeds amounted to about £2O. Methodist Fair. The Ashburton Baring square Methodist Church is now rapidly Hearing completion,, and when finished it will be the most handsome and imposing church in the Ashburton district. . To .assist in raising funds f<ir furnishings, an "Eclipse All Fair" was opened at the Tancred street Hall yesterday afternoon. The stalls were heavily laden with an infinite variety of goods. A very substantial sum was realised. The stail-holders were;— Plain and fancy; Mesdames R. Collins, 11. J. Constable, and 'IP. H. Knight; cake, Mesdames J. Moore and Stone; produce, Mrs C. Technical School. ■ At the monthly meeting of the Board of Managers of the Ashburton Technical School, held yesterday, Mr T. Hayes presided. A vote of sympathy'was passed with Mr C. Reid in his illness. The financial statement showed a credit balanco of £739 His lOd. In answer to the Board's enquiry, the Director of Education wrote stating that it was not possible at present to award intermediate certificates to pupils attending the Ashburton Technical School. The Education Department advised that it would'approve of the appointment of Miss Ruby P. Whiting.us a student teacher, and Miss G. Matthews and Mr C. A. Y. Stewart; as fulltime staff teachers for the present srear.5 r ear. Advice was received from the Canterbury College School of Art to the effect that M.r Critchley would conduct the art- classes at the Ashburton school in place of Mr McKenzie, who was carrying out special work at-the Duuedin Exhibition. Messrs E. Houston and ,T. Watson were appointed a. Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. Exhibition Committee. A meeting of the Ashburton Exhibition Committee was held last night, when the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) presided. ' The Canterbury Provincial Committee wrot;e stating that, the Ashburton Committee would be at liberty to show any- j thing in (lie nature 0f... primary products, while it would also take the re- I sponsibility of collecting, transporting, setting up of its own exhibits, and decorating its. bay: The Canterbury Committee hoped that arrangements would bo made for the Mayor, Mayoress; chairman of tho County Council and ■his' wife, to be "at. home" in 'the Court during two separate weeks in the I course of the Exhibition. The letter coh- J tinued that £IOO would probably be sufficient to set up the Ashburton exhibit, therefore they hoped that 1 the ] balance from the district would be applied to the Provincial Committee's! general expenses. The' Ashburton Acclimatisation Society advised that it was arranging to supply stags' heads and stuffed fish for the Ashburton Court. Mr F. W. Seldon said the tendency was for Ashburton to lose its identity, but it was agreed that Ashburton should proceed on its own. He stated that they required to arrange, an attractive Court, and the 1 cost could not yet be estimated. The Canterbury Committee would be fortunate if it was given £3OO from Ashburton. It was decided to invite applications for a design for the Ashburton Court, and to obtain its exact dimensions from the Canterbury Committee. An Unusual Story. The unusual story of a . man who thought it a joke to be arrested and placed- in a cell at the lock-up was told before a Justice of the Peace yesterday morning, when a man appeared on a charge of being drunk. The defendant was a member of a committee wliich held'a "hard-up social" at'Allenton. and lie was dressed us a very rough customer. The police had been asked to keep an eye on and a constable in plain clothes arrested the' defendant, who was standing at the door with another committeeman. The constable, asked: "What are yoii doing here?" and the man's companion considering it a joke, replied; "That's what I'd like to know." The constable did not know it was.a fancy dress dance, and told the defendant that it was such as he spoiled dances. Defendant laughed, ana the constable called him out, hailed a taxi" and took him to the station. 'f}, e ' fendant said that he then determined

An invitation was received Iroin i in' Ashburton W.C.T.I". to attend the celebration oi their twenty- , first anniversary on Tuesday nest. It j was decided to ask Sister Annie Tocker to speak at the September meeting. Mrs Hong reported that arrangements had bc?n made for Mrs Don to describe lier experiences in America. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £5The speaker for the afternoon was the Rev. *A. -S. Morrison, who gave an account of the doings of a conference of temperance workers which had been held in Christ-church. Afternoon tea was served. A meeting of the committee of the Rakaia Football Club was held in the library on Tuesday. Mr M. P. Cooke presiding. The secretary was instructed to write to the Ashburton SubTnion that the club would entertain the teams in the junior match. Ashburton v. Fllesmere, jbut would assume no other responsibility. It was decided to hold a local sports meeting and seven-a-side tournament. It was decided to pav £'2s to the Domain Board as part cost of the new dressing-shed and to thank the Board for its action in buildinsr the shed. A concert in aid of the funds of the South Rakaia School was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance, all the available space being occupied. A varied programme was given by local performers and the school children and each item was well received. The
performance of the children reflects •Trent credit on Mr Cooke and Miss South who. assisted! by Mrs Cooke, undertook their training. The fancy dancing of -Miss P. Hill, of Christchurch, was a special feature of the ■programme and was loudly applauded. The following was the programme;— Overture by Messrs 11. McDonald and C. Chamberlain; songs by Misses Morrison, K. Stewart, M. McNamara and Messrs L. Oakley, Hartigan and A. Oakley ; song, "New Zealand" by the school children: songs in character, "Mellow Moon," "Rock-a-bye," "Ours is a Nice School," 'Tailing Leaves," "Don't- You Remember?" "On the Road." by tho school children ; Brownies Duct by Lily Pye and Mildred Oliver with chorus from Std. 2 and 3, an amusing rooster parade by the senior boys; recitation and song by Itutli Morrison and senior Kir Is; dance, "Sir Poger de Coverley," by pupils of Std. o and 3, and fancy dances bv- Miss P. Hill. The accompaniments were played by Misses I. South, A. W. Hardy and B. Stewart. ROKEBY. A very successful euchre tournament and dance were held in the Rokeby School in aid ol' the school funds. There was a large attendance. Tho prizes were won -by Mrs Cotton and Mr F. B. Magson. Consolation prizes were presented to Miss Gilmour and Mr J. Cairns. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs .T. Stewart, Mrs Donaldson, Miss McNeill (Waimate), and Messrs Cotton and'Piatt. Mr G. Hooper was M.C.
