NORTH CANTERBURY.

KAIAPOI. In spite of unfavourable -weathejj conditions the North Canterbury Sports Club held a very successful tournament iu the Drill Hall on Saturday evening. An exhibition bout was staged bv Mr V. Thomas's two small sons, who showed considerable knowledge of the game. Mr W. Page (Ashburton) was referee. Messrs E. J. Corcoran and D. P. Mahoney acted judges, ana Messrs J. McMullan and W. J. Heney as timekeepers. The bouts resulted as follows:— Feather-weight— W Davey beat J. Sellars; T. G. Wright, a bye. Final—W. Davey beat T. G. Wright on points. Light-weight —C won from R. Monk by a knock-out in the first round Welter-weight-Diggs beat A. Thompson. Heavy-weigh t-C. Gardiner beat A. Birchfield.

HANMER SPRINGS. The annual business meeting of the Presbyterian Church was attended by the Moderator (the Rev. J. Xewlands) and Mr F. W. Banks, an elder, both from Waiau. The annual report and statement of accounts showed that the affairs of the church were in a satisfactory condition. The business concluded, the remainder of the evening was devoted to a social, which was enjoved bv the many present, bongs were given by Mrs Mclnnes, Mrs Kay and Mrs McKenzie, Sister McMillan and Mr Walton, recitations W Mrs 8.-eckbu and Master Jack Phillips, and a hymn by the girls' choir. An excellent supper was provided by tne ladies.

AMBERLEY. At the monthly • meeting of the school committee there were present Messrs K P.. Shier (chairman), E. Chamberlain, A. Watson, and A. Lukey. The headmaster's report showed that the attendance for the month had been extremely good. The new chairs and tables tor the infants' room had come to hand, and had been put into use. It was decided to hold the. seven-a-side tournament for the schools in the Kowai district for the Ml is Shield on Saturday. The afternoon tea was left to a ladies' committee.

OXFORD. At the monthly meeting of the Oxford, Central School Committee there were present Messrs A. E. Cooper (in the chair), G. A. Rvde, J. Roulston, W. H. Knowles, T. Doody, J. T. Periiam, W. J. Skurr, A. H. Scott and Dr. Burnett. The headmaster's report showed: Primary roll for July, 27G; average attendance 255; secondary, 19; average attendance, 1G.5. The school has now reached Grade VA. It was decided to grant the school holidays from August 14th to Monday, August 31st. The school football team had secured third nlaee in .the North •Canterbury Schools' competition. As the buses were being overcrowded on the Cooper's Creek and Carleton runs, it was decided to ask the Board for extra accommodation. The supply of drinking water at the r.'sw school was said to be very unsatisfactory, and it was decided to a.sk the Board to furnish an adequate supply. |

LEITHFIELD. At a recent meeting of the members of the Oddfellows' Lodge, it'was, decided to hold tho fifty-second annual ball, next month. A strong committee 1 , ■with Mr M. Fleming as secretary, was set i'4> to mako the necessary arrangements.

Ovine to the inclement .weather, the fortnightly euchre tournament under the auspices of the Public Library Committee, was not held on Saturday evening.

Much sympathy is felt for Mrs Toohey and her three children; in their bereavement, caused by the de?th of Mr Matthew Toohcy, after a short but severe illness.

SEFTON. On Saturday evening the weekly shoot, of the Sefton Miniature liifb Club took place in the Rink Hall. The adores . were as follows:—Sofitori iv. Southbrook—P. Topp 70, G. Clarke 70, T. Dalzell 70, S. Quick 70, G. Quick 70. L. McGowan 69, F. Scott 69, F. H. Ford 69, J. Mathers 69, H. Withers 68; total, 694. 'Last week A. Mathers won the junior "Hottie" Button and this week it was won by T. McGowan. Mr G. Clarke won the 1912 cup. Owing to the light failing' the shoot-off for the- Clarke Shield not finished.

OHOKA, Basketball is now in full swing; at the local school, and the senior girls* scored their first win by 18 points to 2 against a team from Waikuku, when afternoon tea was provided for the visitors and players by the parents. It is hoped to play a match against Kaiapoi this week. Various meetings of the committee in charge of the arrangements for the ladies' ball have been held, and judging from the numerous acceptances received a most successful gathering is expected. Arrangements have been' made to effect various improvements to the local tennis courts before serious play begins in September. At a meeting of the committee it was decided to support the idea of the formation of a North Canterbury Union to arrange for and control play between clubs in the Counties of Eyre, Ashley and Rangiorr;. Mr Newton was appointed the club's delegate to the initial meeting to be called by the Southbrook Club if sufficient support was obtained. The club proposes to. put on a fancy dress b?.II early in September, and arrangements have been made with a Chrst?hurch hand to supply the music. Much regret is felt that Mr Reynish and his familv are leaving the district noxt week. They have identified themselves with' all the socir.l movements and have made hosts of friends and well wishers, who hope that the move will be an advantageous one. His property has been purchased by Mr Johnston, from Oxford.

EYRETON. The return card match between Clarkville and Eyretoi? was played in the hivll, thero being a large attendance. After a most enjoyable evening Clarkville won by 12 games. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr L. Giles, extras being played by Mrs Higsrinson. The Cricket Club wr.s to have had its onening day on Saturday, but play was nut off on r.ccount of the rain.

MARSHLAND. The social evenings arranged by the School Committee continue to be well patronised, and are evidently a very popular form of pastime. Recent winners of competitions were Misses Cox, Sjandford and Wells; ~„d Messrs G. YVatson, B Arnst, H. Hibbard and A. iioloslu Miss . On Saturdav evening about fortv residents of Hills ro?.d naid a surprise visit to Mr and Mrs Torrance, to wish them farewell on the occasion of their leaving the district. A most enioyat>!e tune was spent in games, dancing, cards and vocal after which a most tempting simper w?.s served. 1-hirnicr the evening M r Waugh, on behalf of thoss present, took the opportunity to present Mr and Mrs Torrance and family with a handsome clock, and in dome so. referred to the verv high esteem in which they were held bv tbe residents of the surrounding district. Mr Torrance, in reply, expressed his pleasive at seeing so manv present, and thanked them for their god wishes, whilst the presentation would always recall plec.sant recollections of their str.y in the district.

OMIHI. Till baturday, when a southerly rain set in, the weather had been springlike, the sun shining all day long. At the darxe held recently under the auspices of the Glenmark footballers, a gay crowd danced merrily to music provided by Mr Fairbaim. A large number witnessed the football match between the Woodend and Glenmark juniors, which resulted in a win for the local boys, who have now won the North Canterbury Sub-Union's junior championship. This team has to compete a.gainst the Haniner juniors for a cup given by Mr Rutherford.

PREBBLETON. A basketball team from Prebbleton visited Christchurch on FrKay afternoon to play a match with a Sydenham/ team. The match resulted in a win for the City girls by 32 points to 12. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather conditions, there was a fair attendance at the Hall Committee's euchre party on Saturdav evening. The evening's play will not 1 be reckoned in the computation of the season's aggregate points. Frizes were won-by Mrs W. Hr.nds 1, Mrs G. Millar 2, . and Mr A. Gallagher 1, and Mr C. Chesr mar 2.

There was an excellent attendance at'the euchre tournament held in the Public Library. Prizes in the ladies'! section 1 were won by Mrs McTeigue 1, Miss G. Campion."2, Mrs C. Hands 3. and in the gentlemen's by Mr Gabit'es 1, Mr J. Harding 2, and Mr T. Campion 3.

GREENDALE. At tr.e monthly meeting of the Court Richard Stephens, A.0.F., Bros. S. Wc-rsfold and N. Kay were appointed to represent the Court at the annual concert and dance of the Court Star of Dunsandel. It was decided to pay the subscription to the F.S.B. Association. It was p.greed that the Court semi £2 2s to the Royal Victoria Hospital. Bro. L. Colee nresented Bro. F. Lewis, of A.shburton, with a P.C.R. ribbon.' and certificate.
