There- is a general impression that Mr Baldwin inado himself acquainted with tho viewpoint of both parties in tho coal crisis. It is not improbable that tho leaders will bo invited to confer at Downing street within a week, if a private solution fails. Mr Smith, addressing tho International Miners' Federation in London, said that tho position of tho industry in Britain was unprecedented, and needed the gravest consideration. It was reported that, through German undercutting, the French tainers wero being asked to agree to longer hours and twenty per cent, reduction ; in wagCH, and that there was a similar crisis in Belgium.
