Lang (Now South Wales Premier) stated that the .settlement of the shipping trouble would mean the ciul of job-control. The Premier telegraphed the InicStato .Steamship* Owners' Association asking if it were prepared to insert in its articles the disputed clatiM> guaranteeing the conditions in force hefore the de-registra'tion of the union if a guaranteo were- given l>y tho New .South Wales Government and Transport Group of Unions that job-eon-trol would not he attempted. It is unofficially stated that the Union Steam Ship Company signified its willingness to follow the Commonwealth Lino and insert the clause.

Tho owners told tho master to use his own discretion and he decided to alter the articles. [When the steamer Hollinside, which is under British articles, completed loading cargo for New Zealand ab Bunbury, tho crew declined to get stoatn up \mless Australian rates wcro observed in Australian waters.] EFFORT TO SETTLE DOCK DISPUTE. DECISION OF OWNERS* ASSOCIATION AWAITED. (AtTSTKAUAS AXD Jf.Z. CABLB ASSOCIATION.) (Received July 7th, 9.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 7. A full crew for the Espcranco Bay has signod on. Mr Lang, Premier of New South Wales, is conferring with, tho unions concerned with the Mort's docks in an effort to scttlo the dispute. Tho transport group is also considering tho matter. The Union Steam Ship Company has denied the statement that the company would insert the guarantee clause in articles, stating that the matter will bo dealt with by the Steamship Owners Association. The latter association met in Melbourne and debated tho action of the Commonwealth Line in agreeing to a settlement, after allegedly first drawing the private owners into the fight in tho joint action for the union's deregistration. It is not expected that a decision will be reached to-day.

The Steamship Ownors' Association announced at the conclusion of its meeting that the agreement between the Commonwealth Line and the transport group has not affected the Association's policy. CANADA AND WEST INDIES. ♦ TARIFF AGREEMENT SIGNED. (Received July 7 th, 11.40 p.m.) OTTAWA, July 7. The Canada-West Indies trade agreement has been signed by representatives of the two countries, under which increased tariff preference and better steamship services hare been mutually granted.
