BERLIN, May 11

President von Hindenburg, prior to his departure from Hanover for Berlin to assume the Presidency, addressed a largo gathering. Ho earnestly pleaded for unity, and s:.id he would bear in mind the poor and the distressed, and try to act as a peacomaker. He was given an enthusiastic sendoff and received a triumphal welcome upon his formal entry into Berlin. When the train reached the gaily beflowercd suburban station of Heerstrasse nine aeroplanes wcro hovering overhead dropping flowers. The President, who was wearing a top hat and frock-coat, was welcomed by the Chancellor (Herr Luther), the Chief Burgomaster of Berlin, and other notables, with whom he Bhook hands silently.

After the presentation of a bouquet by the Chancellor's young daughter, von Hindenburg left on a five-mile route to the Chancellor's palace, the road throughout being lined with cheering crowds, whoso salutations the President acknowledged. Nationalist organisations were most prominent, as the Republicans adhered to their earlier boycott decision.

Throughout the drive von Hindenburg exhibited the air of an old man well pleased with the cordiality of his reception.

At tho conclusion of his drive the crowds dispersed quietly, the Monarchists marching off singing patriotic songs.

The President will take the oath morrow.
