NORTH CANTERBURY.

♦RANGIORA. In response to a largely signed petition, the Mayor (Mr R. Mcintosh) is inviting the business people to close their premises from 11 a.m. on Saturday, on account of the North Canterbury Racing Club's race meeting. Mr H. G. Davis, the Postmaster at Eangiora, who has been promoted to Chief Postmaster at Westport, left yestcrdav for the West Coast, to take up his duties there. Mr G. ,T. Cowan, act-ing-Postmaster, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Davis with a leather snit-easc before he left. In doing so, he referred to Mr Davis's many excellent qualities, and his kindness to the staff. Mr Davis said ho was sorry to leave Eangiora, where he had spent three and a half happy years. Mr A. Valhawen, who was to have-been-the new Postmaster, has been appointed Postmaster at Dominion Road, Auckland. Mr Cowan is acting-Postmaster' until the successor is appointed.

KAIKOURA. The annual dance of the Hapuku Ladies' Hockey Club was held on Friday evening, and was very well attended by residents of the surrounding district and of Kaikoura. A most enjoyable programme of dances was gone through, to music supplied by Mr W. Thomas, extras being played bv Mrs S. Harris (violin), Miss M. Gill, and Mr Escott. ; The ladies were responsible for a dainty supper. Mr Frank Godfrey carried out the duties of M.C- During an interval in the proceedings, Mr A. Howard (on behalf of the hockey girls), presented Mr and Mrs Guinane, who are severing their connexion with the team, with a handsome eiderdown qnilt. In making the presentation, Mr Howard made enthusiastic reference to the many good qualities of the guests, and to the leading part they had taken m promoting 'the sport of hockey in the district. The club owed its good financial position mainly to Mrs Guinane'sefforts as secretary. Mr and Mrs Guinane suitably' responded.

WAIAU. A meeting of those interested in -boxing, convened, by Mr R:,Crampton, was held in the Coronation Hall. There was a good.attendance. Mr H. W. D. Rogers was voted to the chair, and after some discussion, it was decided that a club, to be called the Waiau' Sportß Club, should" bo formed. Mr Brian McCleary was present, and offered to render'any assistance he 'could. Officers were elected as follows: —Patrons,-Col. R A. Chaffey and Major J. A. Northcote; president, Rev. J. P. W. Busch, who was a member for a number of years. The .'North Canterbury Caledonian Society wrote acknowledging with thanks the •use of the Association's hurdles .and ropes for their sports.. Arrangements have been made to hold a combined memorial service for the late Mr Massey at the Anglican Church to-morrow evening at 7.30 p.m., and it. is expected that the ministers of the-various denominations will conduct the.service.

LOBURN. A football team -has recently been formed, and great enthusiasm is shown by nlayers and residents also; On Saturday last the Loburn' team journeyed to Cust and .won.

The postponed welcome home- to.Mr J. H. Parker is to be held to-night. Mr John Lee (Kaikoura), is the guest? of Mi- J. S.'Hiatf (North Loburn). Miss Ena Dawson returns home today after spending a fortnight's holiday at Ellesmere.

WAIKUKU. The Waikuku Mutual Improvement Society, met in-the Methodist Church vestry. Mr B. McMillan was elected convener for the next meeting. The Rev. W. B. Cuming, the new president, gave a very interesting address on "The delation of the Gospels to the Acts." Greetings were received from the .ex-, president, Rev. F. E. Foot, who has left recently for •.-Maori'. Hill, Dunedin. A committee of live, Rev. W. B. Cuming, Mrs J. Morriss, Miss Judaon, Mr Koj>o and Mr Robinson, were elected to draw up a new syllabus. A meeting of the.trustees and officers of the Woodend Methodist Church circuit was held on Monday niglu- ;u tlio Waiki-ku Methodist , Church vostry. Rev. \V. B. Cuming occupied the chair. After a lengthy- discussion, it was decided that each church in the circuit should raise '£2s for the W r cK>dend Parsonage, which is badly in need of repair. At the weekly' dance on Saturday night thirty couples danced to excellent music.

Late on Sunday evening a slight accident occun-ed at tb» Little Ashley culvert. A partv of five, returning to Taylor's Mistake, from Amberley misjudged the turn in the road, and drove the car on to the culvert. With the help of some of the residents, the car was raised to level ground again.

CUST. Owing to tb 0 funeral of the late Prime Minister being held to-morrow, and as a token of their respect to his memory, the committee of the Plunkct Society have postponed their'gift afternoon till Friday at the residence of Mrs Colin Mcintosh.

The tennis match also arranged for to-morrow against Ohoka, has been postponed for the same reason.

PREBBLETON.

AVhen the scholars assembled at the publio schoola on Monday morning the flag was flown at half-mast and the head teacher made appropriate references to the death of the Prime Minister, after which the pupils were dismissed for the remainder of the day.

At a recent meeting of subscribers to the Public Library, held for the purpose of electing a new committee, confidence in the existing committee wafc expressed by returning to office all the sitting members.

.Following upon the wet spell at the beginning of last week, the weather was bright and cold, with some fairly heavy frosts. Yesterday afternoon conditions were again dull and cloudy with indications of rain.

TAI TAPU. A social was held recently in the Methodist Schoolroom to welcomo to the district the Rev. T. J. Wall*, his wife and family. There was a largo •attendance, and Mr J. Gilmour, on behalf of the church, extended a hearty welcome to their guests and expressed the hope that their stay in Tai Tapu would be a very happy one. Mr H. E. Peryman, on behalf of the Sunday school. Mr T. O. Morgan on behalf o'tl the Bible Class, and Mr C. H. E. Graham, for the school, also welcomed the guests. An enjoyable musical programme was pnirided by members of the- congregation." The Rev. T. J. "Wallis responded on behalf of his wile and family and thanked them heartily for their warm welcome. Supper was provided bv the ladies. .

, The tennis handicap tournament resulted as follows:—Miss Hilda Heinzmann is winner of the ledies' singles, and/Mr Ken Suckling winner of the gentlemen's singles, the ruhners-up being Mies Rita Heinzmann and Mr Douglas .Suckling. • An enjoyable social was held in the Town Halt on Friday evening in connexion with the Presbyterian Church. Thoßey. F. Robertson presided. The fpllowing programme was contributed and wrs thoroughly enjoyed by all: Pianoforte duet. Misses I. a.nd'R. Gilmour; pianoforte.solo, Master R. Macartney; song, Nancy Mackenzie;. recitation, Lorna Dowker; quartettes, Mesdames Robertson, Thwaites, Rev. F. Robertson, end Thwaites; duet (piano and violin), Misses Gilmour; song with harp accompaniment, Mrs H. Dulieu; duet (ukeleles), Messrs Suckling Bros.; song. Mr Dowker. Competitions were won by Miss D; Heinzmann, Miss Suckling, and-Mr K. Suckling. Snipper was provided by the ladies.

KIMBERLEY. There was a good-attendance at the dance held'in the hall last week, and all present spent a most enjoyable evening! Excellent music for the dance was supphVJ by Messrs W. Bettle, piano, and }V. East, banjolino, both of Christchurch. Extras'were supplied by Miss Morgan (West Coast) and Messrs S. Dunn(Kirwee) and A. Hart. The duties of, M.C. were efficiently carried out by Mr Campbell McCausland. •The following were elected on the school committee: Messrs J. W. Mackay (chairman), J. Wright; J; Beaman, J.. Steele, ; and Payne. Mr Geo. Gartcry resigned, arid the vacancy was filled by Mr Payne. •'• ■

The members of the Courtenay Social Club, held the opening meeting of the season last Friday evening,; in the schoolroom. There was a fair attendance. The evening's entertainment took ■ the form of a progressive euchre match, followed by a dance. Tho prizes' in the ladies' section were won by Miss P. McNae Ist, and Miss AVhvte 2nd,' and in the gentlemen's section, Mr G. Rout-Ist and Mr David Finlay •2nd. Mrs A. L. Stewart supplied the music for the dance. During the evening Mrs E. Browning :gave a song, Mrs : Stewart playing the accompaniment. The ladies served a tiairity super. -.

SERINGSTON SOJJTH. There was a large atendance, at the last' weekly euchre party and dance. The ladies' prizes for euchre was won by Mrs J.' T. Moore, who received half a uozen cups and saucers, and the men's prize of 50 cartridges went.to Mr J. T; Moore. Music for the'dance was supnlied by Mr and Mrs Qu'aife and Mr A. Payne was M.C. . \ ' ■ The farmers have started to work their land again after a spell of eight or nine days, due to the recent heavy; rains. In some cases the ground is wet and fine weather is wanted, so as the winter wheat can ;■ be sown. Several sharp frosts have been experienced lately-

BURNHAfIL The first of the winter series- of entertainments in" aid of the Burnhani school funds took, place on Thursday evening. There was a very good attendance, considering a meeting was held at the. camp the same night. On the completion of the card games, supper was handed round, and the floor was then cleared for dancing. The music was supplied by Mr A.K Shadbolt. The - military camp-annual ball is tobe held earlier this year, in the first week in June. Quite a number of ferrets and weasels, have.been.seen and caught lately by trappers and shooters. What is to happen to them when the rabbits in their immediate vicinity become scarce is aproblem. Judging by the number of rabbits caught, and ■ railed•• away each daj'. they should soon-become scarce. Poultry-keepers would be advised to keep their fowls secure at night. Owing to the acceleration -of theexpress trains commencingthis week, the express train which used . to-...rush through at.7 p.m., now-passes through at 6.40 p.ro. On Wednesday ovening the Ashburton-Ghrisichurch- train leaves' twelve minutes earlier, at 5.40 and the. train .from Christchurch for Ashburton will pass c.i the same time. The difference in the - times of the other mail and express, trains will not . be appreciable. . Messrs "J. and"W. Jaipirson hate completed their contract of building a water tower, at the military- camp. The .tank, which is built of ferro-ebnerete, is 4(;ft high, and will hoW 13 030-gallons of water. Messrs Job Osborne; and Co., with their plant",-are how boring forwater, which will be pumped up by electric motor into, tile tank'."
